Definitely wouldn't mind more Cates on Surfer.

It looks like he isolated the power he and Ego drew from the cosmos and stored it at the dead portion of his body. Thats why everytime he fought back, the comic was explicit in that it was his own power cosmic that he was using against Knull and not the seeds..
It had to do with the major theme. Something about going against impossible odds with "valor".

Even though creating suns is outright freaking amazing, I think the big ft is him fighting Knull while weakened. Knull is obviously above Herald level. Looking at it, FAR above Herald level and Surfer was holding his own and defeated him during the end.
He was also destroyed to where his atoms were collapsed and remade himself.
