Delaying films again and again has detrimental effects especially since it's not exactly clear when the world will return to "normal". So, instead, WB made the decision to put it on HBO.
Again Really depends how much it was gonna make. My point is they figured this was never going to be a billion dollar movie anyway, so might as well use it now to max out HBO subscriptions.
Yeah its not clear if we will return completely to normal, but Tenet managed $362mill in slightly better times without a vaccine being rolled out. So normal or not, it goes without saying their other planned 2021 blockbuster releases will most likely do far better at the box office with the same simultaneous HBO/Theatre release.
IOW theyve opted to take an exceptionally huge loss with this one. And this one specifically. In fact the others might just break even with their theatrical release, and HBO subscriptions could be their profit.
