I don't get why China has the leverage in international business relations.

Surely Chinese companies lost big on dropped deals with the NBA and Hollywood. Is nationalism more important to Chinese CEO's and shareholders then profit margins?

I think it has less to do with debt, and more to do with labor. Developed nations largely stopped manufacturing things, because they could not compete with cheap Chinese labor. Things cost more when workers have to have a living wage and humane working conditions.
