And pretty much. Liu Kang suffered because Cole Young was the main protagonist; Liu was just there to drive the film's narrative along. With the personality and motivation given to the OC, Liu was but another side character essentially and thus not given the presence or character onscreen like with Robin Shou's version.
That said, his fight with Kabal was alright, but even Scorpion's Revenge gave him more to do in the end, and he was robbed in the climax of that. None of the characters for the most part (except Sub-Zero) have a significant enough amount of screentime because of all the focus given to Cole.

Oh yeah, this film didn't even have the tournament aspect of MK or the buildup to it. No boat, no island of Shang Tsung... They just had the bad guys try to invade earth prematurely, probably so the creators could avoid having to make all the set pieces.

And that automatically makes this one good? It's not like both films can't be bad. MK 2021's about as low for me but for different reasons.Like with comparing the Star Wars sequels to the prequels (or vice versa), saying "At least this isn't Annihilation" isn't a real defense.
