DDM, if you have an Xbox, Project Sylpheed should be up your ally. Good and cheap, great space shooter from Squaresoft that reminds me a lot of Descent Freespace 2 mixed with Wing Commander.
Or you can probably emulate it these days.
I like how capital ships can be taken down with the right tactics and weapons, but totally one or two shot you if you aren't careful.

Super thankful for this recommendation. I really like the "Firefly" approach to space-stuff. RPG elements mixed in with space.
That first game you recommended had amazing/great ship-play and control. It was superb. Topnotch. The upgrade system was great. Wanted it to be better than that.
I really realy like upgrading my ship and buying new ships like old school mech warrior games. The game that combines the amazing upgrading options and ship options mixed in with the gunplay from that first game (forgot what it was called) is the holy grail. Needs a good story. And co-op.

If you like upgrading, R&D is a big part of this game. You earn points for mission performance, extra cap ship kills, ect, and put them towards unlocking increasingly overpowered weapons.
Then you can do New Game Plus for those hard to reach achievements (Like killing all cap ships in the DEMO MISSION, which for kicks I tried doing with the training gear they give your first time through. Tried. 😱 )
DDM, whats your opinion on reversed controls for space sims to be more like flight sims, so pushing up simulates bringing the nose down ans vice versa.
I used to do that with a flight stick, but doesn't really work with a gamepad imo. Everspace I straight up needed to have FPS like controls on the analog sticks, with left and right strafeing, up and down going forward and backwards, and the right stick controlling the camera FPS style.
Project Sylpheed precision matters less though, with all the auto tracking options and heavy emphesis on macross missile massacres.

For years, I could not play any flying or shooting games without a y axis inversion. Then some FPS game on Xbox wouldn't let me invert the Y axis and I played it for ages and got used to the "regular." Now it's tough to go back to y-axis inversion.
So I don't know....

Is the fact that cheaters never prosper the reason Trump never got anything accomplished? That's one flight sim that crashed and burned all up in your space 🤣😂🤣🙂💞💪👑😎 😆 😂 🤣 💃
What gets me is how a game like Squadrons with barely any content comes out and gets praised to the high heavens, while a game like Freespace 2 or Project Sylpheed gets a mediocre critical reception.
Its like the brand name alone is all people care about, and are incapable of judging a space sim on its own merits.

You judge video games based on merit but not Antichrist Damien Trump. Okay 👌😂 🤣🤣🤣🤣
So is Squadrons as low budget as it looks?
The visuals alone are mid tier indy at best. Just compare them to, say, Everspace or Rebel Galaxy Outlaw and tell me it blows them away.
Not that visuals should matter, but when a major company cuts corners with all their massive budgets, it makes them look like misers.

Wow, only 9.9% of Steam gamers reached the lab in Everspace.

I actually only bought this recently myself, at a Gamers Con. Probably overpaid at 10 dollars, but no regrets.
Doing a complete play through now. Normal mode, only using the free gear they give at the start, and the second set they give at the halfway point.
It plays sort of like Ace Combat in space. Or put another way, Afterburner, if it wasn't on rails, mixed with Starfox.
Very missile lock based. Hordes of enemies, big and small.
I'm enjoying it so far. Only real deaths happen when I'm careless against cap ships (Which should never happen if you learn the barrel roll like defensive special move ala Star Fox. Do the tutorial.)
