Statistics consistently show that households with guns are more likely to experience gun violence.

That's true, but to be fair the gun ownership isn't necessarily the causation of the gun violence. Two of the main shared causes of buying guns and gun violence are living in a dangerous place where you buy a gun because you fear for your safety and having a violent personality, so buying a gun because it fits your disposition.
There are of course also many accidents, and you can't use a gun in a dispute if you don't have one, so there surely is a big aspect of it that is causal, but not exclusive.

It is pretty hard to commit an act of gun violence without a gun.

Especially if there is one in your household. Hence, the statistics. Most gun violence is self-inflicted or inflected on an immediate family member. It is access that escalates to violence. People think the gun will protect them against home invasion which is rare. When in all actuality, the gun will most likely be used for them to shoot themselves in an emotional crisis, or their spouse in a domestic dispute.
