Minneapolis disbands it's police force

You read that right. The city council has voted and they are going to disband their police force. This is actually happening.

https://www.ibtimes.com/minneapolis-police-disbanded-city-council-establish-new-public-safety-system-2989620

The article says they just have a nebulous public safety plan for a replacement. Other articles have said that this plan would include counselors and social workers responding to drug offenders and mentally ill. There was nothing talking about how to handle violent crime, beyond something like public safety workshops...

Also, what if the mentally ill people get violent? What are the counselors and social workers supposed to? There have even been tweets by some people involved with this that imply that you should just accept break ins to your garage, etc. It's also like they think if the police are disbanded people will stop being violent period.

This is just...this is ****ing insane. I know the general discussion forum has traditionally been all about you guys trolling each other ad nauseum, but does anyone really think that totally disbanding the police force is the answer? It seems incredibly naïve to think that all murder, rape, and violent crime will stop and that there will be no need for anyone to be confronted in a possibly violent manner ever. How will murders and hate crimes be investigated? How will violent criminals be apprehended? Because those things will still happen.

Seriously, can you guys cut the bullshit before it starts? Can you please just discuss this in a civil manner without the dick measuring and gotchas?

This is some scary shit with chilling implications. What if some right wing nut job shows up with a rifle and starts shooting? What if some left wing group starts going around beating up people who disagree with them? Yes, I put an example from both sides of the political spectrum in there, get over it and discuss this please. This is ****ing scary and it should be discussed without any of the partisan bullshit that 99% of this forum as devolved into.

It’s a ridiculous ultimatum that was presented to the Minneapolis police department, and even more ridiculous that they followed it. Police are obviously needed for various reasons and any denouncement of said forces are obviously unrealistic in the most extreme sense.

Time to bring back the Pinkertons? No, but seriously, this is a VERY bad idea.

I'm interested in seeing what system they will come up with, the idea of splitting the functions of the police department into different institutions makes a lot of sense, I think. Of course if the return of funding to reasonable levels could have been done in a more orderly fashion that would have been better, but of course this isn't the first time and it's sort of come to a violent boil now. I presume a smaller core of trained and somewhat armed people that deal with violence will be necessary, but I think a lot of people hav realized that the militarization of the police and the limited democratic oversight has been a big problem and change is sorely needed. I hope it works out well for Minneapolis, and that there'll be new ideas that can be applied in other places.

Good post, me too. I think the US will progress to become more like the wealthier European Countries eventually.

I hope so, it would be a better life for the citizens. Europe is by no means perfect however, and there's huge problems that need to be addressed there, too.

Oh please, Europe is far worse than the US in many aspects. Just last week a soldier in my unit got put in the hospital in Berlin by a bunch of Muslims just for the fact he was white and in the army.

In the UK, the British people watches on as a soldier was killed right in front of them.

Let’s not forget Count Dankula, or Charlie Hebo in Paris.

Doesnt sound like the Berlin I know very well. What did he do to cause it? Berlin is a small very white city. Even places like Alexanderplatz are white hubs, I mean it has the holocaust memorial and the remnants of the Berlin wall and checkpoint charlie to remind people. Where was he? Was he spouting off in some culturally insensitive way. I know Berlin well mate, what did he do?

I hope the democrat's are given 100% of the power, I want to see what kind of system they want in place, without any other group being able to taint it.

I read that they defunded, not disbanded. op link is 404 btw

Re: Minneapolis disbands it's police force

It sounds like a city that has run out of options. To come to that decision is ludicrous. It's going to be a massive warzone.

The democrats know what they're doing.

Are you saying we learn from their mistakes?

So it's racism as well?

Makes more sense.

If an administration can't find a middle ground between militaristic maniac police force that murders it's own citizenry and no police at all then they really need to be removed from office.

This is not new. Camden, New Jersey did it in 2013. They were one of the deadliest cities in America, and crime there has dropped precipitously.

Fascinating, I just looked at pictues of this place... now that's a slum. Very sad America has places like Camden as large scale ghetto's.

Read about that, too.

If no one is there to document crime and make arrests...then you'd see a drop in all crime stats, right?

To me, it seems like a stat that is too good to be true.
