The Republican party back then is not the Republican party of today.eg Who throws a hissy fit when a petition goes out to have a racist Confederate "hero" statue taken down? It's generally the Republicans and Conservative of today who protest that and rant "but my heritage!".
Good news, even hard-core Republicans are now not siding with Trump is regards to keeping US military bases named after Confederate figureheads. The walls are crumpling.
Confederate is a part of American history. They were also Americans, felt strongly about their ideals and fought for them.
Erasing them from American history is an extreme in my view. You can respect your history (and) course-correct.
Otherwise you will not have much history to talk about. There is no such thing as a perfect history. It is simply interesting and thought-provoking.
