Trump fears that if it's a video debate he could be silenced by the moderator when he goes over his two mins while ranting and/or interrupts Biden, which are his two greatest debate tactics. So yeah, from Trump's POV it would be a waste of his time.

Remember when Trumpers said Biden was going to make up an excuse to get out of the rest of the debates? Surely they will be ideologically consistent here, and castigate Trump for being the chickenshit coward they thought Biden was going to be.

So it seems that even with Pence interrupting both had comparable talk times.
