Superman 2025

Plan to see this later though so far I heard that the cast all shows up for work... which is a good sign.

Though I'm also hearing a lot of loose plot inspirations from Smallville... which is weird but also cold I guess.

Have yet to see folks complain about the destruction like Man of Steel. Which is also odd as the trailers make it seem like this movie has just as much if not more.

Oh and for anyone who hasnt seen it yet, dont waste your time with the post credit scenes. This is the start of a new Universe, so either dont have post credit scenes or make them relevant to something/anything.

See, I prefer it not be some essential cliffhanger tease. Marvel got too annoying with that. And it's funny that it backfired big time with that Jonathan Majors, guy.. heh. It's probably best to just not count your chickens before they hatch...

Although, I saw an interview with Gunn and he said he showed the film to some other filmmakers to get some advice and Drew Goddard helped him realize he shouldn't end on some dark tease. So I wonder if he did originally have some dark post-credit scene. Okay, found the interview...

It almost seems like a bit of a "Fuck you,

Spoiler:
you don't get it, Snyder..." because in this film Superman goes out of his way to avoid as much collateral damage as possible, saving people, dogs, squirrels, and trying to prevent damage to the city and buildings, etc.
.

It's kind of awesome because this Superman is a class act.

👆

Just got back from it.

Weakest parts are Gunn's script and some weird choices re: Superman's characterisation.

Otherwise, movie is solid, and is a good start for the new universe imo. Lots of good coming out of it, so reason to be optimistic imo.

The next DCU film.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (June 26 2026) - "While celebrating her 21st birthday, Kara Zor-El travels across the galaxy with her dog Krypto, during which she meets the young Ruthye Marye Knoll and goes on a "murderous quest for revenge".

A 2nd Pattinson Batman is also in the works, but will remain in a separate "elseworlds" as they call it.

Another Batman featuring Damian as Robin is in the works, which will be part of the this DCU. Clayface and Swamp Thing are slated for their own films as well.

Hmm I wonder if audiences will show up to 2 seperate Batman franchises running simultaneously.

Although I guess both Roger Moore and Sean Connery were alternating as James Bond at one point IIRC.

What about Superman's characterization did you not like?

I never would have thought I'd be interested in a Supergirl movie, but I hear lots of hype about the comic it's based on being really good, and after seeing Gunn's new DC universe potential and the fact that it's a space adventure with Jason Mamoa as some sort of bounty hunter, I'm pretty psyched.

I have high hopes that Bat-Mite will make an appearance (I think the chances are very high in James Gunn's DCU). Re-watching Peacemaker Season 1 right now and they mention him. Hahaha...

Pretty excited about those, some darker, body horror apparently (at least Clayface).

Oh yeah, Wonder Woman got confirmed earlier far as the script for her movie being written. Beforehand, all we had to go off of was the HBO Max show for the Amazons which I assumed was buildup to Diana anyway, though good to have a bit more reassurance far as plans for her and that she's not being oddly left out.

Am set and scheduled to see Superman tomorrow, in any case.

Too impulsive/quick to anger to a point that goes beyond even his earlier "outraged hero fighting for the little guy" stuff in the comics. A general feeling that I don't think Gunn really understands that a person can be decent/good without being overly naïve. That, and an element of snark that feels like it undercuts several scenes, to the point that I think Gunn either doesn't want to, or just can't be, profound or poignant.

Obviously some of this stuff is worse than others. I don't think it's a complete mess or anything. With a better script, I think future Superman outings will be pretty good.

What did you think of it?

This was ok.

Jor-El's message was stupid tho...

Got back from second viewing.

It's so good upon repeat. I laughed at all the same things I laughed at the first time, possibly even harder, and just generally appreciated how well-crafted the film is.

I am really looking forward to more of Nathan Fillion on the Lanterns show. He's perfect with the comedic timing. Also caught some more footage of Peacemaker Season 2 before the movie and damn it looks good.

Just watched it online. Eh, it was ok. 6/10.

Spoiler:
The good - Supermans portrayal and attitude, Lois, Metamorpho, and Lex.

The bad (for me anyways) - Krypto, Mr. Terrific, Hawkgirl, the ditzy blonde, the robots, and the worst,,,,Supergirl. They were all annoying to me.

It would be a huge departure from long standing Superman lore if it stands as is. So I'm guessing the truth will be revealed in the sequel.

Unless Gunn is legit doing his own thing here, honestly, could probably go either way thinking about it more.

Upon 2nd viewing of the film, I think it's confirmed to be the real in-Universe message. The film makes a big point to say that it was confirmed by multiple reporters, digital forensic specialists, etc, etc.

Spoiler:
So apparently Superman's biological parents did intend for him to take over earth with power and breeding.
Pretty crazy. Something tells me we haven't heard the last of this plot element.

I can definitely see Gun going with that angle, even though it's a huge departure from canon, as it also paints Superman in an even better light. But I can also see it being revealed to be faked by Lex and his super-duper genius machinations in Superman 2. I'm about 40/60 here.

From what I'm hearing from comic nerds there is some comic precedent for it, though.

Seems like just about everything in the movie has a basis in the comics, actually.

For sure, just the other way is far more prevalent in stories.

I believe this Lex is largely based on the All-Star Superman series. Only read parts of that, but I did watch the cartoon.

Back from the film, will say this was one of the better ones at capturing human emotion out of the live actions.

While Mr Terrific was probably the MVP otherwise, the minor character appearances aside from him I ended up liking more than I thought I would, between Metamorpho, Guy Gardner Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, and last but not least, the dog. I guess it wasn't hard though for Gunn to make those characters with their few minutes of screen time more interesting than most of the supporting characters in Black Adam that were bland in comparison.

Even the Daily Planet characters like Jimmy, Perry, and such were pretty spot on looking compared to how barely recognizable they were in the Snyderverse. Christopher Reeve's son making a cameo as an on the ground news reporter was also a nice throwback. Clark's parents were more simplistic in portrayal than I thought, but serviceable and I guess the last thing we needed was one of them dying after how Snyder handled them.

The nanotech powered Engineer I wasn't too familiar with due to being one of the lesser used characters. Kinda thought she was Livewire at first with the vibes her abilities gave.

Everyone else is pretty much what you'd expect as shown from the trailers. Pretty fun experience.
