MLB pulls out of Atlanta for All-Star game due to new voter ID law

Major League Baseball commissioner Robert Manfred announced Friday that the 2021 All-Star Game will no longer be held in Atlanta.

The decision follows an election bill signed on Wednesday by Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp, which opponents say disproportionately disenfranchises people of color. It’s one of the first tangible responses to the law, which was denounced by business executives across the United States earlier this week.

Source.

Although they have the right to have their All-Star game wherever they choose, they're reasoning is faulty.

Voter ID is not racist.

It's common sense.

*Their, not they're.

If Georgia provided ID to every of its residents in the mail, free of charge I wouldn't have a problem with voter ID. But it seems they don't do that, so it seems mainly designed to lower voter turnout, since in person voting fraud is a negligible problem everywhere in the US.

👆 Bingo.

Yet everyone that wants to drive heads to the DMV and registers for a license.

Everyone that wants to fly needs an ID to check in?

Seriously, this is such a useless stance. Having an ID to vote is not racist. So the next time I head to dental and they ask me for ID to check me in, I’ll claim they are racist.

@SquallX not everyone drives and not everyone flies. In fact many poorer voters in Urban areas never get these things.

Which is the point. These types of laws generally negatively impact poor urban voters which in our country tend to be overwhelmingly minorities.

The Georgia voter law also allows the Georgia State legislature to override and put in superintendents in counties to oversee or make final judgments on elections.

Considering the Georgia legislature is overwhelmingly Republican this could allow GOP to make rulings in their favor in counties like Fulton( I think this is the name of the country)

Also the bill standardizes times in counties to 9-5. Counties have the option to expand those times from 7 to 7 but most were already doing that. Once again these times generally effect poorer working class urbanites.

And the water and food provisions are down right draconian considering that Georgia cut down the number of polling places which overwhelmingly, you guessed it, effected Urban areas. Where people could be standing in line for many hours with people talking about waiting in line for up to 5-10 hours just to vote.

So yeah this bill is most definitely targeting urbanites which in Georgia are almost overwhelming minority. In that regards this bill is most definitely racists.

And if you don't believe the Republicans won't abuse their new found election powers in upcoming elections well I live in Ohio where they've abused their power to gerrymander districts and gain a super majority for ten years even though the state is very much closer to being split. Then they used that power to get strong conservative measures passed even though once again the state is closer to 50/50 in terms of voting patterns.

👆 Everytime Klaw/Eon Blue and or a banned other has made this kind of thread on an obviously racist bill not being racist if people do things which require time and resources they don't have due to poverty etc. It is given an excellent explanation like yours explaining to him and hangers on why their opinion is deficient. Soon after, another thread, very similar will be made and the same facts reexplained yet again. By now this pattern can only be considered trolling tbh.

Buying alcohol requires ID, flying on an airplane requires ID, driving requires ID, international travel requires ID.

All of those are racist right?

If someone like you is accusing me of being racist, then I must be doing something right.

That's the fraud they catch. The point is to not get caught.

Put another way, they never caught Traci Lords for being a minor in the porn industry from background checks every time she applied for a passport.. No one would have known, had she not admitted to it.

This is the same government being completely fooled by a 15 year old girl.

They could be if those laws overwhelmingly hurt people of color like these Georgia voting laws do.

But they would. Every single one of them, but especially driving a car as many don't travel internationally but virtually everyone needs local transportation.

Oh wow that means the government is completely ineffectual and should never do anything.

I guess we shouldn't trust them to make these voter laws either in that case 🙄

You joke, but that isn't a bad point.

If they couldn't catch a teenager with a fake ID, what makes you sure they could stop voter fraud?

I would say the largest barrier to driving a car isn't getting an ID. Plenty of people drive around without ID believe it or not. It's actually paying for a car that can be the biggest barrier to driving. Same with travel. Most poor people don't travel simply because they can not afford it.

But one thing that definitely should not be pay to play is voting.

I honestly am not sure how to respond to this. For one I am not an election fraud expert so I don't inherently know all the protocols they have in place.

But the thing I will comment is the logical flow of this. The idea being that if one person can beat a system once that means everyone can replicate that feat and we are powerless to stop it on a mass level.

Let me use an example here. I could get away with shop lifting once and maybe even a handful of times. If tried to all of sudden rob a bank thinking it is the same thing as shop lifting I'm probably going to get caught.

Now imagine if every shop lifter tried to rob a bank. If would be pretty hard to hide and get away with.

In Canada, you have to show ID to get healthcare, which is a legal right.

Guess that's racist too.

I mean if they forced residents to buy the ID required then it could be if it overwhelmingly affected poor minority Canadians.

Is this the case?

The ID is free, you just have to go and apply for it.
