U.S. COVID Cases Surpass Summer Delta Surge
The United States logged a seven-day average coronavirus case count of 168,981 on Wednesday, amid a nationwide spike driven partly by the omicron variant, surpassing a summer peak of just over 165,000 infections on September 1st.
Even before omicron was detected, coronavirus-related hospitalizations were rising in the United States. About 46,000 people were in hospitals for COVID-19 in early November, compared with nearly 70,000 now. The Biden administration and many state governments have been pushing immunized Americans to get booster vaccinations.

Florida Reports Record 26K+ New COVID Cases
With the omicron variant rapidly spreading, and lines of people swarming testing sites before Christmas, Florida nearly set a new record for daily COVID-19 infections. The state reported 26,811 new cases to the federal government from Wednesday, the CDC's latest data shows.
Florida's highest single-day case increase was 27,669 from August 26th, according to the CDC. This latest increase is the second-highest. The state appears poised to soon surpass the daily record, a sudden turnaround after Florida had been reporting fewer than 2,000 cases per day from late October into early December.
