Boris Johnson

We haven't had a decent Prime Minister since Gordon Brown. Who lost because the right wing Press convinced the voters that he was the reason for the 2008 crash not the global crash, recession and forex traders.

Brown actually saved us through that crash, which I don't think he gets enough credit for. But he lost because he didn't have the charisma of Blair, but his party carried Blair's stench from the Iraq war.

Unfortunately we still won't get a decent PM for a long time to come given who the leader of the opposition is.

We'll he saved the banks at least.

I thought he saved the world?

Congrats to you guys losing that turd lump. Hopefully you get a PM that isn't as much of a corrupt shitbag, ideally none at all.

It's not the PM that's the problem. It's the Tories Rob.

Fair enough. Similar how Trump is a pile of shit and was a disastrous POTUS, but the real problem is the GOP and how they've embraced the Far-Right.

Blake had posted earlier that the Tories are at their weakest right now? Could they lose power soon?

Let's hope they get weaker yearly as old people die off, we're the Brexit vote now... the result would be very different.

Not if there's no general election called.

The problem the Tories now have is that there's no one of any standing left to lead them. All their big names are complicit in keeping Boris in power and they were the scrapings from the mud underneath the barrel anyway. Having Liz Truss as Minister of one of the Great Offices of State was and is a complete embarrassment. She has absolutely zero credibility or respect on the world stage and she's Foreign Secretary.

Priti Patel literally looks like a bond villain and has already acted against the interests of her own country in 2017 and was essentially sacked by Theresa May for it but was rewarded by Boris for backing her.

The rest are also just a bunch of inept, talentless sycophants who only got their positions because they were the only ones still backing Boris Johnson

oh well, so long boris...every bell has its end, so they say

Ah true, had forgotten you lot got stuck with Johnson after May resigned.

Who has the power to call a general election? I assume otherwise the Tories will put whomever they pick.

The Brexit vote is the old people vote.

They're the ones who still remember watching Hollyoaks reruns at the caravan imagining longer summers and less non-British people like it is in Australia.

The Tories will have a leadership race. Candidates will put themselves forward and Tory MPs will back them. Any that hit the minimum number of backers can go forward to a vote by party members although typically more and more will drop out until 2 remain. Doesn't always work like that. When David Cameron resigned because he had backed remaining in the EU and lost, none of the pro leave Tories put themselves forward (Almost like they knew what a nightmare it would be) and only Theresa May ran to be leader.

After they have a new leader they usually get a lot of pressure to call a snap general election as they essentially don't have a mandate from the electorate to govern but they aren't obligated to call an election and in this case they might not because they're closer to the next general election than the last one and they've just lost 2 constituency by-elections after their MP's resigned and they only won a 3rd because they stood unopposed because their previous MP was murdered.

Only the Prime Minister can call a general election.

The next leader will likely be someone who's looking to retire anyway like Sir Alec Douglas Home did in 1963.

If the leader doesn't call an election, they'll have to be really popular or face a vote of no confidence themselves.

"Senior" MP Tom Tugendhat is the first to put himself forward as the next leader. I'd say he has absolutely zero chance because hardly anyone in the country knows who he is or could point him out in a line up but the same was said of David Cameron when he ran.

Thanks for the breakdown.

I assume the chances of Johnson calling a general election before he officially steps down is effectively zero.

That 'leave' comment reminded me of Johnson's victory speak after the leave vote won, he looked and sounded like he was giving a eulogy.

He was a journalist before and during the time he was a politician. Everything you need to know about him lies in the fact that in the run up to the Brexit campaign beginning officially, he wrote 2 different articles. One arguing to leave the EU and one arguing to stay in. He chose which line to take entirely based upon which had a better chance of him becoming Prime Minister. That was his only goal. He had absolutely zero principles or policies of which to pursue as Prime Minister. Only that he wanted to be it.

Unsure if he even could call one now that he's PM in name only. If he can, he might because he's spiteful enough to leave as much carnage in his wake as possible.

Deplorable, but he is clever.

Comically absurd that he both did that and was still allowed to be PM anyways.

Everything tainted by Johnson’s lies needs to be undone. That includes his Brexit

Genius Stewart Lee satire.

He's a great debater; I respect him for that.
