But if the human is not yet alive -- and a fetus is not considered alive until a certain stage of the pregnancy, as has been pointed out repeatedly...
We're not saying that late-term abortions should necessarily be allowed...I think pretty much the consensus of the pro-choicers on here was that abortion should be available up until the 16th week of pregnancy. At the 16th week the fetus hasn't yet reached viability -- the ability to survive on its own outside of the mother's womb.
*bangs head off keyboard with frustration*
I swear...
Did you NOT read my first point? YOU. CANNOT. KILL. SOMETHING. NOT. YET. ALIVE.
Need I make it big and bold and brightly colored and flashing?
And yes, I HAVE had biology in school. Got a 4 on the AP Biology test last year. "Eating and breathing" are NOT the definitions of a living thing.
Fine, Believe that, Its not gonna stop me or anyone else.
I believe everyone is entitled to their belief/opinion, its when they start trying to pass laws and stuff to force their beliefs on me when I get pissed off.
You believe Abortion is wrong, OK good for you! Don't have one,
Just don't make people who DON'T its wrong to stop.
There are some acceptions to this rule, mainly when other PEOPLE, (people, not fetuses that are un-sentient) are put to har.
There. Now stop being assholes.
That is a good point Darth Surgent, but then what about somebody who is in a coma? Is it OK to kill them too? After all, they are not self aware or conscious.
Silver Stardust, yes it is killing the fetus. The woman isn't killing it, she's hiring a doctor to kill it. The fetus is already alive. It would die in the outside world, but just because it is dependant on the mother doesn't mean it's dead.
"Biologic human life is defined by examining the scientific facts of human development. This is a field where there is no controversy, no disagreement. There is only one set of facts, only one embryology book is studied in medical school. The more scientific knowledge of fetal development that has been learned, the more science has confirmed that the beginning of any one human individual’s life, biologically speaking, begins at the completion of the union of his father’s sperm and his mother’s ovum, a process called "conception," "fertilization" or "fecundation." This is so because this being, from fertilization, is alive, human, sexed, complete and growing."
...
"What simple measure would you use to define Human Life?
We would ask:
Is this being alive? Yes. He has the characteristics of life. That is, he can reproduce his own cells and develop them into a specific pattern of maturity and function. Or more simply, he is not dead.
Is this being human? Yes. This is a unique being, distinguishable totally from any other living organism, completely human in all of his or her characteristics, including the 46 human chromosomes, and can develop only into a fully mature human.
Is this being complete? Yes. Nothing new will be added from the time of union of sperm and egg until the death of the old man or woman except growth and development of what is already there at the beginning. All he needs is time to develop and mature."
It's a common argument by many that abortion is not killing, when it clearly is. Don't try to sugarcoat abortion, it is what it is. It's the termination of a pregnancy, in other words, killing an unborn child.
Omega: Yeah, life begins at fertilization. So technically, in the rare instances when the hormones in the birth control pill do not work, it is technically killing the embryo. But, since the fertilized egg has not been implanted, it's not yet a pregnancy and therefore the birth control pill is not an abortifacient. Either way, I'd rather have the embryo terminated before any growth is possible than let it live for a month or two and then decide to kill it.
But it becomes a human being with a concious thought. And you you can kill somebody in a Coma me thinks.Because they have already lived.
It BECOMES a human being with concious thought. But it isn't at the fetal stage.
And so you're for killing someone in a coma, who has lived but may still have a full life ahead of them, but are against aborting a fetus that may be unwanted, could bring extra burdens into a family, could put the mother at risk of dying if carried to term, could be the result of incest or rape...
Ahh, but birth control isn't 100% effective...the only real way you can be totally sure to not get pregnant is to practice abstinence.
And what's with the whole "don't get pregnant" attitude...how about "don't knock up your girlfriend/wife/some chick before they're ready"? Remember, it's as much the guy's responsibility when a girl gets pregnant...
