There are no planets to ram into, I'll explain later. Plus that would be several second reaction time (slower than a human).

Do you know how big space is? You can blindly travel a million light years in a random direction with the chance of hitting anything being less than 0.001%.

He could have stopped at anytime after he exceeded the speed of light. Also Surfer traveled in a circle around the Earth. This circle had a diameter of roughly 2 diameters of Earth.
So that means Surfer completed at least 4 revolutions in a second.
Each relolution in 0.25 seconds. That's bordering human reaction time.

By this logic, this "normal human senses" wizard would be one of the best speedsters in the DCU. Since both he and Superman traveled to the edge of the universe in the space just a few pages
