Riiiiiiiiiiight.

Some reasons:

Just like what Kit said, I believe Treebeard was merely referring to the fact that Gandalf and the other Istari only appeared physically on Middle-earth in the Third Age, whereas Ents have been around since the First. The Ent, Fangorn, has seen more of the world than Gandalf.

I dont believe so. As the Ents knew the presence of Tom Bombadil and of the Undying Lands.

The Ents knew about the presence of Tom because Tom himself was already in Middle-earth since the beginning as well. That's why he and Treebeard are considered as the eldest creatures in Middle-earth. And I think Treebeard knows about Valinor because his "masters" are there. (Yavanna, etc.) And I don't think that just because Fangorn is one of the oldest and he knows almost everything that happened to Middle-earth, it was already automatic that he knows all the Maiar that existed. Remember there are too many of them and no one really knows how many they are exactly. Maybe he didn't know about Olorin before (since he's always in Lorien or with Nienna) and he only knew Gandalf once he descended to Middle-earth at the beginning of the Third Age.

2 cents. 😄

because GANDALF is younger than treebeard........its the maia spirit olorin, that is the older one......

Um, I always just assumed that GAndalf was younger than Treebeard? It says so in The Book! 🙂

Yes. I think It is the better explanation. But only if we assume that Treebeard didnt knew that Gandalf was a Maia. 😑

lok ay my last post

he treats gandalf and oloring as two seperate people.....gandalf is younger than treebeard...as gandalf is the body.....which he only bore for a short time...about an age........olorin is the spirit that inhabits the body

It depends on the time that Gandalf was there in Middle-Earth not Gandalf/Olorin himself.

Thats a good explanation if Treebeard knows Gandalf/Olorin is a Maia. So, he talks to Gandalf as he was talking to a common Istari, even Gandalf was in Middle-Earth since the Second Age, his embodiment still is young.

Uh....Gandalf appeared in Middle-Earth around the 1000 year of the Third Age.....

exactly how late can you get!

stupid do nothing valar taking bloody years

Gandalf had only just been reborn, so in this new life as gandalf the white, he was probably only a few days old

Gandalf Knew Saruman Wanted The One Ring, As Early As The Year 2851?

The White Council.....gandalf sat outside the circle saruman laughed at him....

Gandalf did not laugh again, and he did not answer, but looking keenly at saruman he drew upon his pipe, and sent out a great ring of smoke, with many smaller rings that followed it. Then he put his hand up, as if to grasp them, and they vanished. With that he got up and left Saruman without another word; but saruman stood for some time silent, his face dark with doubt and displeasure

allllso in another narrative of it

It was a strange chance, that being angered by his insolence Gandalf chose this way of showing saruman his suspicion, that desire to posses them had entered his policies and the study of the lore of the rings and of warning him that they would elude him.

I think this is true. In the Appendex of RotK, in the timeline, it says something about Saruman's search for the Ring. His true motives may not of been knoe, but Ganda;f should of noticed the signs (if he could)

Thus he didn't, for a friendship with Saruman is not easily thrown aside.

hey

I think that at most it must just have been the very vaguest of suspicions at that point.

he was suspicious, yes. But i think he wanted to wait until he got more info until he rushed to assuming.

no, its also said gandalf suspected him fully......and knewe he wanted them......

also this aided saruman and sauron GREATLY for what did he blow the rings with.....smoke....from what....pipe weed...from where....the shire

you're assuming too much of Gandalf, Sauron.
