The church made up demons. The most worshipped gods in Pagan religions were made into demons and witches like Freyja, I believe. In mythology she also had a cat, and the church made cats demonic too. They made her a witch. Just imagine another religion came in, a very powerful one and made Jesus into a demon. The worship of him would be your death. This is what happened to them.
