what makes ppl think gai is so much faster than kakahsi. kakashi is pretty fast too. he might not be quite as fast as gai, but i highly doubt the gap between their speeds is all that significant. gai just shows off his speed more because he has more stamina than kakashi and because the two of them have different fighting styles. kakashi could keep up with gai. his sharingan would be more than enough to make up the difference. i dont think it's fair to make kakashi out to be slow. he's not slow.
Well Kakashi does know over what 1000 jutsu so it's hard not for him to have a new jutsu. Besides Mangekyou Sharingan he mostly uses the same jutsu. Earth Style to go underground, summoning his dogs, or Chidori anyway.

Kakashi opened the first Gate in the manga, he may be able to open more... but that is entirely speculatory, much like Gai's powerlevel or abilities.
Seriously though, based purely on how the sharingan operated in the Sasuke vs. Naruto fight in the Valley of the End, I can't see a melee monster like Gai doing anything other then get his ass kicked by Kakashi. Sure, Gai knows how to counter the genjutsu of the sharingan, but what could he possible do to avoid it's body reading causalities?

The sharingan's precognitive abilities are only useful if you're body is fast enough to react to what it sees. That being said, it is entirely probable that the speed boost Gai acquires from opening the gates may be too much for Kakashi to keep up with. Even if he sees what he is going to do, his body won't be fast enough to react in time.
1. Gai isn't going to open the gates right of the bat.
2. It takes awhile to open the gates... do you think Kakashi is going to stand around while Gai stands there like a statue and goes super sayian?
3. Kakashi can open the gates himself
Gai casually released the sixth gate and dominated kisame (limited chakra) in mid air. As much as I like kakashi, once he gets comfortable behind one his jutsu's it's over. Since, unlike lee gai knows how and when to use his power.
Isnt it said that your average Jounin can open up at least 2 gates?

Gai is faster than kakashi and though kakashi may be able to see him he isnt fast enough to be able to counter Gai's attacks as effectively as he would be able to against any other regular speed ninja.
Example Sasuke vs lee
although sasuke saw what lee was doing his body wasnt fast enough to do anything about it.

kakashi can only open up the first gte and due to kakashi's injury prone body i dont think that this is a wise idea. Plus kakashi has low chakra reserves.
