Elrond will, then, begin a brief re-cap (just as is done in FOTR) of the evnts that have led to these current events. He will leave significant pauses for people to think things over, take things in, and ask questions.
"As is well recorded, the Last Alliance of Man and Elf was at the end of the Second Age, when Sauron was finally thwarted. The events of that Age were many and complex. But earlier in the Age Sauron, a prisoner on the Isle of Numenor, greatest of all Kingdoms of Man that never ever existed, manipulated that produ Kingdom into its own destruction. The true Numenoreans, those who stayed loyal to the Valar, fled east to Middle-Earth in advance of Numenor's destruction. Numenor already had considerable colonies and influence on Middle-Earth, and the survivors drew all these together to form the two Realms of the Dunadain- in the South, Gondor, at the borders of Mordor itself, and in the North, Arnor. These two Realms were vast and in their day covered much of the North-West of Middle Earth, from the Grey Havens in the west, all the way down to Mordor itself. The High King of these Realms was Elendil, though he ruled with the help of his sons, most notably his eldest son, Isildur.
The free peoples of Middle-Earth were sorely pressed by Sauron's forces. The Elves led the resistance against him, but since the deception of the Rings of Power, they had been on a back footing. Chief amongst the Elves at the time was my Lord of old, Gil-Galad. Elendil and Gil-Galad met together, and formed the Last Alliance of which so much is spoken.
Elf and Man together at that time were powerful indeed. Elendil and Gil-Galad themselves were unstoppable on the field of battle, especially with their weapons, Gil-Galad's spear Aiglos, and Elendil's sword Narsil. To the very gates of Barad-Dur was the war pursued, and after a long siege, the final battle saw the defeat of Sauron. But as is also well known, Gil-Galad and Elendil were both slain by Sauron himself, and the final blow on Sauron was struck by Isildur, having taken up his father's broken sword.
"With the death of Elendil, the Kingship of the Human nations had passed to Isildur. But he was... beset by problems after the wars. And whilst returning to Arnor to take up his throne, he was slain by an ambush of Orcs, and all his sons with him perished also.
From this point on, communication ceased between the two Kingdoms. Isildur had left his nephew Meneldil behind in Gondor to run things for him, and Meneldil now assumed the throne of a seperated Gondor, creating a new Royal line which we Elves do not fully recognise the legitimacy of, though they are at leat mostly Dunadain.
One true heir of Isildur survived. Before he had gone to war, Isildur had left his youngest son Valandil here, in Imladris, to be protected. I tried to teach Valandil as best I could before he went to Annuminas to take up the throne, but of Arnor only. The legacy of Elendil and Isildur, of two untied Realms under one King, was lost. Worse was to come, so much so that part of me wishes I had never helped Valandil take his place on the throne.
But so it is in this age that Arnor and Gondor have ever been seperate Kingdoms."

Meanwhile, Baranar calls his meeting to order as well. He begins with a quick strategic re-cap. Baranar is virtually now under siege. The plague grows worse; he can manage no more than two dozen defenders to man the walls. The Orc/Dunlending presence currently outside the walls now numbers at least 300.
