I just don't think their music is all it's cracked up to be. My being a "Norma Jean fan" - which is a direct insult to my intelligence - has nothing to do with the immature glorification of a band that I have every right to have a negative opinion about.

You took it as a direct insult to your intelligence. Are you NOT a Norma Jean fan? Coz by calling you a Norma Jean fan, I am implying you're a fan of the band. Are you? It would appear so. You can come and claim how immaturely glorified Tool "are" (PS: They aren't), and it's all good. But when I say something even closer to fact about a band you like, it's an insult? Get riz-eal. You don't think their music is all it's cracked up to be for whatever reason, fine. Not gonna lose sleep over it. You obviously thought it would be a plan to start a Tool bashing thread.

Well then why isn't the thread called "Tool have some fans who say stupid things"? Why is the thread entitled "Tool bites" with the opening comment "Way way overrated"? If it's the fans you have a problem with, diss them. Not the band.

My fandom of Norma Jean isn't from my immaturity or level of intelligence (not that you ever said that). I am a classically trained musician (in piano, drums, and guitar) since I'm 8 and I listen to classical music. I am very knowledgeable about music history, and I know all about musical theory. Now does listening to Norma Jean nullify my musical abilities and training? No. So there are plenty of exceptions to your theory.

I don't think I've ever heard of any Tool fans that are actually like that. I am a huge Tool fan, and it's not because Maynard looks good when he's in Smurf costume. I like them because they are one of the most amazingly talented group of musicians I've heard, Maynard is easily the best lyricist (IMO) and an EXCELLENT singer, the music is very intricate, and the lyrics are very deep and are something that you can take new meanings from everytime you hear them. THAT is why I like Tool.
And what is it with people calling Tool overrated? They are not, by a LONG shot. KMC has a disproportionate number of Tool fans as compared to real life. Ask the average person on the street if they like Tool and they probably won't know what you're talking about.

Your reasoning still doesn't justify the thread title and opening comment. If your problem is the fans and the music being bland to you, comment on that. Coz obviously to us (and factually) they're not overrated.

No, not really. How a band with as low a profile as Tool can be overrated, is puzzling (it's not, but it's stupid).
99% of Tool fans are fanatical because they don't get into them by chance. They are a band that are looked for. They are rated highly by critics who do happen to love them because everytime they release something, it leaves almost everything around it, in the dust. There is reason and logic behind fanatical Tool fans. The only Tool fans I've ever met who are fanatical to the point of saying the stuff you said say it jokingly. Even if people like the way Maynard looks, it's always secondary from my experience. To a Tool fan the music always comes first.
Fact is, it's hypocritical to create a thread of this nature then say you're not dissing the band, when you have done, in the eyes of many a Tool fan. It's disrespectful to pass something off as overrated purely coz you don't understand it because if you did, they wouldn't be overrated to you.

And then there's me, in the 1% of Tool fans that got into them by chance...when I was 9 I was in the car and Sober came on the radio, I liked it a lot and have listened to them ever since...but I didn't become a big fan of them until the last few years, as I've gotten older and begun to understand the lyrics.
