Yeah, I am aware of the difficulty of fighting terrorism, queeq, but the situation is not the same. Israel always got widespread condemnation from most countires (save the US) for some of its more militant operations and the Palestinians always got a lot of sympathy.
Poilitically, the situation could not be more idfferent. The US has got support from almost every relevant country- even Russia is not hostile- and furthermore, the US might even be directly helped by others.
This is a concentrated, GLOBAL effort against such terrorism and it is utterly different to any anti-terrorism campaign conducted before.
It is a myth that the terrorist is an invisble target andf that it will sprout more heads for each you kill. No-one has EVER been allowed to strike at the heart of a terrorist, which the US is now determined to do,. Terrorsits need places to train, ways to get money and routes to ship in equipment, just like everyone else. All these things can be shut down, IF you have the means, will and support to do it, the US have all 3.
In fact, the US's biggest problem now is if they overdo it and lose sympathy. Nothing like a few bad targets to tuen the world back against you.
Queeq, what would you suggest? Let it go? Leave it alone, hope it goes away?
No, I believe the correct course of action is the only rational one available.
America is doing the right thing, attempting to find out who is responsible. If a particular government, like the Taliban, is protecting these people then the United States goernment will go to war with these people.
Everyone assumes that War means fighting, this is not the case both made it ABSOLUTELY clear that all out war is the last option. Though whether their public face matches the actions that are taken remains to be seen.
However, right now they are talking about a politic war, not a military one. That may come later.
As much as I don't want a war, something has to be done.
Yesterday I was filming near a town centre and we heard a plane which sounded quite low down. EVEYONE stopped what they were doing and watched as it flew over head. It was no where near us and I've heard planes alot louder than that but we were all scared. I'm 21 and live in a democracy. I shouldn't feel scared.
We're entering a very senstive area here and Honestly I can see Saddam Hussian's point when he says we shouldn't use force against the Taliban. This could mean disaster for other Arab nations. However it seems foolish to believe that we won't go up against the Taliban.
As for the Isreali/Palistanian situation..that's kind of a different situation because I have sympathy for both sides. It seems like a real no win situation compounded by the violence on both sides.
I on the other hand was thrilled yesterday when I heard a plane fly over head. It's been eerie not hearing any airplanes. I live 20 minutes east of DFW INTL, which is the 4th busiest airport in the world, and it has been beyond strange not hearing any air traffic. Seeing the airplanes yesterday and today brings back some regularity. 🙂
I feel bound to qualify what I said earlier. We shouldn;t lose sight of the fact that this is Afghanisan we are talking about there. The Russian army couldn't conquer that place in two decades (and don't go around thinking that this was because the Russians were crap).
Afghanistan has never rolled over for anyone. If the Americans DO go to war with them, and get it wrong, it will be far worse than Vietnam ever was.
This needs to be judged very finely indeed.
With the right tactic the Afghan wouldn`t stand a chance, and who will feed them with weapon this time? And remeber the teliban have enemys within their own country. You have the opposition of the late Masod and there is a third fraction as well.
If they saw a chance to overthrow the Taliban regime, dont you think they will help out. If USA should decide to attack Afghanistan the Taliban would flee to the mountains and with todays sophisticated weapon and sattelites it is hard to hide.
In 1996 this Lebanese guy,Hazem Abdallah ,hijacked a Bulgarian plane and he ended up in Oslo where he finally surrendered. His orders however was to crash the plane downtown Oslo(capital of Norway). But he lost his nerve thank God.
He told this story to thew biggest newspaper in Norway sometime in 1997. His orders came from PFLP(Peoples front for liberation of Palestine) and it was all because Norway play an important role in the Middle East peace negotiation between Israel and the Palestinians.
Kind off freaks you out after the USA disasters.
The story ran in 1997, they only brought it back up again because of the tuesdays events. It is scary though, I remeber the case and we found it hard to belive that it might be true. Guess Oslo was lucky he chickened out. The death toll would be nowhere near the one in the USA, but even so....maybe a couple of thousand could have died. Hard to speculate on it now.
