now that we see the juubi in action, it looks like there was some truth in what (presumably) obito told nagato about the big plan for collecting the tailed beasts. it still technically is that long range country devastator he promised him, and then the peace nagato wanted will come if victory is achieved, though it's in some matrix-like genjutsu

Lesse, first was disobeying orders (wanted to do a combo jutsu and he declined), second was then, almost immediately after, charging a majorly dangerous enemy (one who'd stalemated the young-Anko before, and had gotten an upgrade since) in an apparently-fatal scenario, and third was when they found out he did it on purpose because he wanted to push his third tomoe sharingan.
Which he didn't tell them he even had ahead of time.
Oh, and then during the fight he didn't use chidori because he wanted to really test himself, so chipped away at the enemy (who had regrowing vine armor) rather than finishing it off fast (which isn't as bad as it sounds, since the squad was still in an enemy base so conserving chakra is good, but it still got a 'damnit Sasuke!'😉.

All part of the same campaign against the same foes. They're fighting against Clan Chigaya (plant-users I got some feedback on from you guys way back, the ones with the hate-on for Tobirama for killing their leader for trying to steal Hashirama's body) who are supported by Sound. Danzo is in charge of the operation.
They assaulted the Chigaya base, fought some Chigaya special jonins (who had the special ability that, the more chakra-filled blood their plants drank, so the Chigaya plan is to basically lure fairly strong foes in and kill them to gain enough blood to upgrade all their Special Jonin to Jonin level), wherein Sasuke pulled off all of the above in a single fight.
A couple small fights later, found out the location of the Chigaya commander, met Kakashi, told Kakashi the commander's info, then went to pick on small fry because they were tired from sustained combat.
Then, while tired and having just taken out an enemy ambush, another Chigaya special jonin and his squad came barreling at them, and they were screwed- but then the special jonin sliced apart his comrades, because it was really Fu pulling the strings. Then, after brutally killing squadmates in front of the team's eyes (guy was merged with some plant-blades that sliced right through armor), and chasing down the team and freaking the players out before identifying himself, he demanded a report from Anko & co. in a cold-bastard way.
They did, to which he went, "Oh, that's where the enemy commander is. I'll report that now and tell my partner to handle it. I order you to kill this body when I'm out. Five, four, three...."
And they thus had 2 seconds to get in position to kill a massively dangerous special jonin before he started trying to slaughter them.
What time is this RP supposed to take place?
It's several months after the retrieval arc now (wherein Sasuke stayed). I'm planning on doing a second Chunin exam soon (though the players, controlling young-Anko, won't participate, obviously).

Not exactly, the retrieval arc went way different.
Instead of Naruto vs Sasuke, it was Anko, Naruto, Lee, Haku (yes, Ice Haku) and Gaara protecting Sasuke (who was disabled by his seal) vs Orochimaru in Kimimaro's body plus eventually Kabuto support, with Kakashi and Fu (Jinchuuriki) showing up at the end to save the day.
Anko befriended Fu (jinchuuriki) in a prior arc, but some major favor-trading to Waterfall had to be done to get her to show up, so the next arc was all about Team 7 paying back debt to Waterfall.

When Gato betrayed him, Zabuza made a, "Tackle Haku and stop him from doing anything stupid, and I'll handle these punks," deal with Team 7.

Well, things that rely on the main characters acting the same have been butterflied away, but stuff characters'll do anyway keeps going.
Plus, there's not much in the way of official events between now and the start of shippuden.

Mother ****er! Friggin' Neji really is a boss. If he didn't have to protect everyone, he'd be able to withstand all but the biju blasts. His air palm strike is beastly, too. Also, I enjoyed the symbolism of that "free bird" falling when Neji died. That's the same bird he saw during the chunin exams when contemplating his own "freedom" as a branch member.
