He'd be a likable antagonist like Danzo but as someone that's supposed to be a revered hero, not that much.

The flashback made me like Madara even less. So did Tobi's flashbacks. Actually I'm started to think the whole point of flashbacks are to make characters feel cheap and unlikeable at my eyes.

Madara, while loyal to Konoha, wanted no such thing. Really all it seems Madara wanted was to live in peace with his clan and friend in Konoha. It was explicitly Tobirama's mistrust that caused him to abandon the world since it put everyone he wanted to protect in danger and nobody would believe him.

Itachi was stated to just be naturally wise so nope!

That's the problem: Madara didn't seem to really care about being Hokage. Hashirama was the one who wanted him to do it. Madara just seemed content to live his life.

"They will always be an unpredictable variable...for the sake of the village being built..."

It was that statement that made Madara think the clan was in danger and caused him to leave.

there was a precedent you know. tobirama didn't just make this stuff up. he's done research on his ancestral enemies. ther wasn't even any solidarity between madara and the rest of the uchiha, their hatred thing festered for a while and well... enter: itachi

Yeah and there was a precedent that Tobirama would stab an Uchiha and kill him but Madara was willing to put that aside for peace.

Tobirama really did leave behind a shitty legacy. haermm

He stopped Hashirama from killing himself. If he was evul there would have been nothing to gain from doing that.

Doesn't invalidate anything. Madara was clearly resigned to his fate so it's not like he did it to survive.

self-preservation seems like a pretty big motivating factor.

I'm only half joking, but the real reason is that he simply didn't want his friend to actually kill himself. Evil people have friends too.
