To put it in a different light, the first chapter came out over 10 years ago. I personally wanted this to happen much sooner.
From chapter 500, we could have have been treated to another Gaiden, preferably one that dealt with the battle between Hashirama and Madara.

Yea, but lots of other stuff have happened in those 500, and this reveals a buncha mysteries that have to be revealed fairly late in the plot.
I'm sure if Naruto had been less successful, it'd have been revealed earlier and the series finished (or possibly not gone into such detail at all).

True enough.
Though that still doesn't change the fact that this could and should have been done much earlier.
On another note, am I the only one who found baby Sasuke & baby Naruto cute?

I say it depends on how much is revealed. If we get a lot of plot dump, 'specially on Madara stuff, then part of the coolness will be answers to hints we've been dropped for a long time. If it's just a throwdown, sure, but considering it's apparently a multi-act story I'm fine with here.
Too soon and it'd be way above the power level of current plot, too. Only now that Naruto's sage-y and working to control the Kyuubi does it not overshadow the main characters.
IMO at least.
