I'll note not all of these were necessarily the previous generation at the same time, just the ones before the current one. Samehada's last wielder certainly died quite a few years before Zabuza did.

Meh, I guess that different types of attacks could be unique to Lava, or maybe even each user, depending on what they choose to focus on, or their genes/base affinity.
We don't know if multiple abilities are available to the other elemental Kekkai Genkais, since we have only seen one person using each. Wood has had three-four different users, but they all had Hashirama's DNA.
That said, while they are all seemingly different abilities, but they still all fall under Lava/Corrosion Release, which is Fire-Earth.

This is the "previous generation," and it's hard to tell the chronology. It has Kisame's predecessor, but also Zabuza who's younger than Kisame (though given Zabuza's graduation hijinks, he may have gotten in sooner anyway).
Swordsmen of course wouldn't get replaced all at once and last different periods of time, so this is probably the most recent dead one in each slot but in some cases may be the one before that (like Kisame's predecessor), and Raiga (if you want to include him, he probably wasn't being thought of when these guys showed up) would be either before or after one of the ones here and either way could know Kisame.

finally....this is basically an introduction to the former swordsmen, and they are all named and stuff. suigetsu's brother is one of them (so he definitely died). suigetsu and juugo are looking for swords wherever they are, and suigetsu says he wishes to revive the swordsmen and lead them.

Zabuza's sword is still the lamest, although at least it has some power ^^ Well, the sewing one isn't too impressive either, though it is pretty cool.
Looks like Chojiro's sword used to be the one used by the leader. Not surprising, it and Samehada seem strongest.
I wouldn't expect to see Sasuke for awhile.

I think much of the concept was there from early on. You had Zabuza, and mist masks, from the first arc before Bleach started.
If they were in white or black Japanese robes I'd see a connection, but they're pretty diverse in appearance.
