It's kinda hard to explain. I think Chidori is capable of piercing things more easily than Rasengan but rasengan has more power output. When Chidori and Rasengan clash, Chidori disrupts the rasengan gone my piercing it, making it unbalanced and causing the kaboom. Least that is how I see it, I dunno about anyone else.

I just see it as a clash between two equally powered jutsu with different effects. Chidori can penetrate better because it is a ton of Raiton chakra around an arm, while Rasengan happens to have that 'grinding' effect that causes a lot of blunt trauma.
In a direct match-up, they seem to be equal, but that disruption thing you said might actually be plausible.

Idk. My reasoning is so that the water tower scene makes sense. Though if you want to be technical, the rasengan still exploded because it can't be seen here. Granted I suppose that doesn't make much sense of how they'd be inside said explosion(the forms protect them I guess?) but it actually kinda makes sense. 😛
