Or hell, let them come. He just killed Kisame, one of the Akatsuki's finest. If they send Nagato to deal with him, there might be problems. If they send any other pair, Itachi has a good shot of taking 1 or even 2 of them down.
Numbers are then reduced to 6. Yay, Itachi dies for the good of the ninja world and Sasuke will have no reason to hate Konoha.
Nagato's really the only one in Akatsuki (aside from Tobi/Kishi himself) who could stop Itachi in a straight fight, but I doubt Itachi is stupid enough to engage in straight fights with any Akatsuki member without some sort of prep.
If Itachi did go rogue and wanted to take them down, I doubt he could, because of Tobi. Orochimaru's inability to hunt them down even though he owned a country makes me think Itachi wouldn't be able to do so either.

Kisame isn't stupid. If Itachi was planning on killing him he'd probably know. Nah, the best way to get out of genjutsu is to have someone shake you out of it, and Zetsu always has a buddy to do just that literally attached to him. Genjutsu isn't the way to go.

Haha, no. If his only point in the story was as Tobi's weapon then Jesus Christ is that a waste of panel-time. Sasuke is the second main character and gets about as much coverage as Naruto does, with entire arcs focusing on him.
