This probaly sounds dumb as **** but what kind of equipment do you need to make production? Like El-ps production is that done on the computers or is that turntables and whatnot? I want to start doing this but i dont know if i should just get a good laptop and some programs or buy turntables and mixers and all that stuff? any help or reccomendations what to get would be appreciated cause im confused about this..
Well I'm not an expert but I think turntables are only for DJs, and DJing and producing are two different things. The two main ways to produce a beat that I know of are either with sampling or by creating your own synth melodies which really could be done with a keyboard and drum machine. If you're just starting out and you don't even know where to start with producing a beat, I wouldn't go out and buy any fancy equipment, just try to find a free version of Fruity Loops to start out. I'd check P2P services like soulseek and limewire for that.
Recently I've been trying to explain the difference between rap and Hip-hop to two of my friends. And they don't seem to get it. Even after showing them both of these articles:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rapping (they feel wikipedia is unreliable)
and
http://www.rapnews.net/0-202-259247-00.html
They beleive that rap and Hip-hop are two seperate genres that intertwine (rap being more agressive, and hip-hop being more inclined to dancing)
One constantly makes fun of me, and tells me I am totally wrong. And the other beleives it is a matter of opinion, which it is not.
One even gave me an example of how the group Dead Prez is rap, and artists like "Dem Franchise Boys" are hip-hop. But I pointed out that some of Dead Prez's lyrics were "This is the real Hip-hop"
He went on about how he liked rap, but hip-hop was stupid.
They seem to feel that they disprove me with this article:http://encarta.msn.com/encyclopedia_761563537/Rap.html
Would anyone happen to have or know of any other articles, or ways to show them what Hip-hop really is......and what rap really is? It would be much appreciated.
Originally posted by brett1012Well yeah basically it's the same as with any music, to get quality you have to pay for quality, but in the meantime you can sharpen your sampling skills and at least partially satiate your creative appetite in the meantime with fruity loops or another program like that. Don't expect any El-P or RZA beats but let's be reasonable.. a beginner such as yourself wouldn't be making those beats no matter what the equipment. At least this way you could get a feel for the whole thing before you decide whether you actually want to dive into being a producer or not.
do any decent producers actually do any of this on there home computers or do you need to to go a production studio to make anything worth while?
But seeing that you have interest in the field, this RZA interview may be of some interest to you:

Although the term rap is often used interchangeably with hip-hop, the latter term encompasses the subculture that rap music is simply one part of. The term hip-hop derives from one of the earliest phrases used in rap, and can be found on the seminal recording “Rapper’s Delight” (1979) by the Sugarhill Gang. In addition to rap music, the hip-hop subculture also comprises other forms of expression, including break dancing and graffiti art as well as a unique slang vocabulary and fashion senseThis is basically an accurate assessment of the "difference" between hip hop and rap music. They are part of each other. Hip hop originally was considered more of a culture than a style of music, and the "four elements" were MCing, turntablism, breakdancing and graffiti drawing. You combine MCing and turntablism and you basically have rap music. Since this music was associated with the "hip hop" culture, many call it hip hop music instead. It doesn't really matter which one you call it to be honest, either term is acceptable.
Basically tell your friends that they're wrong, and if they don't believe you than they can reference the first paragraph of the very article that they gave you.

I think they are incapable of being open minded. They beleive that rap was always a genre, and hip-hop is relatively new. Which it is not.

there are alot of misleading articls out there, with info that stems only from opinion or ignorance. I never really looked at rap as a genre, hip-hop started as hip-hop, rap is a verb, rappers rap over a beat, they dont hip-hop over them, although i guess nowawdays hip-hop seems to be more of a culture, and with constant labeling of the genre i could see how your friends could come to a conclusion like that even if they are wrong. If i were you i really wouldnt bother, ive tried to get people to listen decent hip-hop, and explain the difference between whats mainsteam and underground, whats wack and whats not, and basically clear up any ignorance of the genre, but it gets old and annoying, to the point where i just dont care.
