Your last sentence is confusing, which one are you voting for? As for Thor going crazy, it's not a matter of holding back, it's a matter of him not controlling his emotion ergo not controlling himself. Thor is virtually the most powerful hero in the Marvel universe right now, nobody would be able to take him down. Unless you think of Eternity or Living Tribunal as heroes.

Surfer wasnt holding back at the end of the comics, and thor going crazy is just -him- no longer holding back also. it doesnt matter if surfer holds back or not, he still couldnt even stand up to 1 shot from surfer (yes it did knock surfer uncsoncscious).
but surfer was holding back, and if he wasnt thor wouldt be able to hit him so he wouldnt get knocked out
They're both good guys, so neither one would really WANT to hurt the other, but if they're in a fight to the death, neither one is going to hold back, so saying Surfer was holding back isn't really fair anyway. If Thor's beating him senseless, he's not going to say 'hey, hold on, let's talk about this.'
it doesnt matter if he's holding back or not. ok, let me explain this to you. surfer holding back....... thor hits him once and knocks him out. ok, now we move on to surfer not holding back. surfer hits thor several times then boom, thor lands that same blow........ what does it do??? oh wait i have the answer in my pocket *pulls out a piece of paper* and i quote "it knocks him out again".
