Gladiator absorbed a near super nova explosion that would have annihilated Half the solar system, I don't anything about asteroids breaking apart.
But I must add on that same day he absorbed a controlled nova blast the Human Torch attacked him with, He laughed as Johnny was astonished knowing that blast would have razed the entire city, yet Gladiator LAUGHS!!!
