because the show has shown several times that smokey is Jacob's brother. He even says that Jacob stole his body from him. We saw how when Jacob beat him and threw him into the stream to wash into the cave of light.
I like this season but it's really starting to aggravate me. the writers are so arrogant. they write things that are in direct opposition to the rest of the series and call them answers. so far we have:
- Adam and Eve are 2,000 years old (there would be no skeleton left after 2000 years unless fossilized, which they weren't), not the 40 or 50 years originally conjectured and intended by the writers.
- The whispers are dead people who's souls are trapped on the island. okay, except now we have a flash sideways universe that people are existing in simultaneously. If you're soul is trapped on the island, you can't be in the flash sideways.....because your soul is TRAPPED on the island. Michael is trapped, yet Keamy and Mikail aren't? They did far worse than what he did.
- Christian was the smoke monster.......except the smoke monster can't leave the island. It can't even get to the Hydra island without a boat. So how is it that he visited Jack all the way in LA and Michael out on the freighter? horse shit.
- Ben snuck into Widmore's bedroom after Alex was killed. Widmore asks, "are you here to kill me?" Ben replied, "we both know I can't do that". Okay.....Ben can't kill Widmore while he's sleeping but can magically kill him now?
WTF writers? Do they even remember the last 5 seasons they wrote?

1) Normally you'd be correct. But You dont know what goes on with time/healing/all kinds of shit on the island...so its not astounding that Jack could have gotten confusing results from his examination of the dead. Plus the cave was sheltered from the elements.
2) You'll realise after Sunday. Nuff said.

I dont think that Smokey ever was the brother.
I think he only impersonated him after his death and that he was possibly unleashed when Jacob's brother swandived into light, or was the Mother all along and the Smoke monster starts at source again like the ghosts in Pacman when they get killed.
That might be one way of them doing this...
Maybe the dagger would have worked on Locke if Jack, had stabbed him.
Maybe the "its got to be you" refers to this.
Then the new Jacob'd have to make sure that no one lets him out again....
Still, it'll be probably be something totally different as these guys have laid some surprising shit down all the way to the end so far...
I think the brother IS Smokey. Why not? Obviously he needs bodies to manifest himself in a non-smoke form. So he picks dead bodies, like Christian and Locke. After all, his own body was stolen. So that basically excludes the possibility that Smokey is defined by a specific body.
The real reason is in the same desire: the brother wanted to leave the island and so does Smokey. THe only possibility is that Smokey already possessed the nameless brother in the womb... and came out for the first time as the MIB. We'll have to see.
It was accurate. It was the writers highlighting that Smokey had indirectly killed him, by getting round the rules and manipulating Ben to do his dirty work for him.

Stage 2: Having the rest play out as it did: Getting MIB and his Buddies to make the donkey wheel. Have them all killed, taking MIB's form and with it their memories.
Stage 3: Manipulate others into killing Jacob and any and all replacements and leave island leaving him free to leave the island.

I did not say Smokey can impersonate. I think evidence points towards him using the bodies as vessels. And there's this thing mother said: when you enter the lightcave, something worse will happen to you than death. If the brother just died: what is the worse bit? If he turned into a bodiless smokemonster for all eternity... now that kinda sounds worse than dying.
I just can't see this all ending getting wrapped up in a neat little bow. Either Unlocke will be unable to die and get stuck there with Jack after this is all over or Ben or maybe Sawyer will somehow end up becoming a new smoke monster thing to contrast Jack's new Jacob. They gotta have a Yin to the Yang IMO. I like how they finally went on and made Jack the new Jacob but seems kinda straight forward for lost. Worried they may throw a curve ball now and have him killed and one of the others have to take up the mantle before its all done with.
