I really hate what Star Wars has become. It's merely a shell of it's former self. I believe that the whole space fighting genre is overcrowded with bore-fests like Star Trek and (gulp) Battlestar Galactica. I'm sure that we miss the good ol' days when Star Wars used to be worth my 12$ and 2 hours. Plus, SW is oversaturated, at least when it comes to being on screen. I think SW would be better of written in books.
With that being said, LOTR could make a return to the big screen. It would probably copy the SW formula and do prequels, telling the tale of how Uncle Bilbo came across the Ring and endured his many trials.
In short, LOTR still has some life in it, while SW should, and soon will, stay out of the movie theatre.
i don't think they'll make lotr prequels - if they were going to they should've done them first cos the plot isn't so good so people will think the films are failures.
if they'd have done the hobbit first and then the 3 lotr's then maybe it would've worked cos eacho ne would have been betetr than it's previous ones .... but the hobbit has always been a seperate part of the story to the trilogy so .. 😖
star wars wise - i agree that the more they've made, the worse it has become!
I like Star Wars better than LOTR. I just think it has a better story. The acting might be bad but I still love it. LOTR is good but I dont see what everyone sees in it. Yeah, Star Wars took some ideas from the LOTR books, but LOTR stole ideas from The Odyssey. In short, everything is stolen, George Lucas is just a better thief.
Well im stuck all i can say is SW fans will keep coming if they
leave their forums saying SW better and LOTR fans say LOTR

First of all, how can you say that SW is a better story?! What's the plot: defeat evil and try your hardest not to turn to the dark side? I mean, LOTR actually has morals and is made up of important life elements:
trust, loyalty, love bravery, friendship, compassion, honesty, freedom, sacrifice, triumph, you know what I mean?
What do we see in it?: story, characters, originality, beauty, and just pure glory in what the movie is all about!
IF we stole things from the Odyssey, don't blame us, blame Tolkien.
PLUS, the Odyssey was one of the first of its kind, the originator, EVERYONE has taken ideas from that, and if Tolkien did, he needed inspiration, and he made it gorgeous.

i think that out the movies star wars was better but the story was better in LOTR and that hd nothing to do with Peter Jackson. the problem with the LOTR movies is that you get Peter Jacksons view of the book not your own. anyone that saw the films before they read the book all i have to say is unlucky.
^^ agreed...but tahts the same with any book-movie...they will always kill the book and you wont ever be able to read them the same way afterwards.
But as far as adaptations goes...LotR was one of the few I didn't despise...Jackson did a decent job of portraying 'Tolkiens view' not his own...but while it is unavoidable to include some of ones own opinions in a film- I think his primary point was to show tolkiens ideas and beliefs and not his own...
yeah he did do it well but what i am saying is that Lucas (although i don't really like him) with star wars is a greater acheivment than Jackson with LOTR as Lucas had to come up with the idea and great story. but i prefer the LOTR story in the book. also i do remember i was a bit dissapointed with some of the scenes that were very important that were left out or changed. e.g sam rescuing frodo from the orcs. in the book it was really dark and gruesome but the film didn't show that. there were many other things like this as well.
There are millions of things that have been left out...If he wre to include every single detail the movies would be like 17 hours long each. I mean you have to live with dissappointments- but what Jackson did with those books not a lot of directors can do. He had to find the child inside himself in order to be able to portray such vivid and fantasitcal characters on the screen. It takes a huge imagination and directing skill to bring tolkien to life.
And he did have to come up with ideas and how to show the story on screen without severly dissappointing ever single fan of tolkien. By no means am I dissing Star Wars, I adore it, Im obsessed with it. I just dont like that you say Lucus had to come up with and 'idea' and imply that Jackson didn't- because he did...
it takes an increadible director to be able to create a fantasy film- but an even more increadible one to adapt a story. Have you ever tried it? it is one heck of a challange. I am a writer and I have written stories and poems and screen plays, but when I tried to adapt a chapter of the hobbit into a screenplay was probably the hardest thing I've ever done: Trying to take a beautiful story and turn it into an equally beautiful piece of film. And trying to figure out how you can portray all these things that have been written about in a real way that is visual. When you're just writing a film then you know as you write what you are going to have to pull off. When tolkien wrote his books- he had no idea they would someday be a film
It depends what point you want to argue from. One is Science Fiction and one is fantasy. One is technological, one is primitive. If we discuss acting, I think one is a clear winner. Im sorry, Hayden Christensen is absolutely horrendous as Anakin. He gives the dark side a bad name. LOTR wins for acting. More capable, mature actors. Plot: both have plenty of plot. LOTR has got a lot more character believe me and history (take a look at the history of middle earth). Trust me there's no comparison here.
Im a big fan of both adn trurst be LOTR is a lot harder to tackle. The texts in particular. Since we're talking about movies, though, its hard to split the two decisively. As a saga, Star Wars cannot be beaten. Looking at individual films, a lot more work has gone into LOTR. Jackson is definitely a better director. Tolkien is just on another level, nobody can challenge him. Winner? Well quite frankly their both brilliant. I really can't split them here.
