Well each army has different limits. Each unit takes more up as the next and certain squads and armies. Like the space marines suad has a limit of 9 + a sergent + a hero of some type if you wish. while the Orks can have in a basic infantry unit a sergent, 14+ infantry and + hero. and Nobs and terminators cost more pop points. Terminators cost 5 pop and each Nob takes up 4 .... Orks get a pop limit of 99 infantry and everyone gets a vehicle limit of 20... tanks take up 3 points each. Land Raider 5. So the Space marines can build 4 land raiders and up to 40 pop of infantry.
I have seen up to 1000+ units on one field at once.
Normally maybe 5 squads fighting for one beginning battle. usually the enemy is trying to use cover and ambush the incoming enemy.
