When she was inside, Mike sat in the drivers seat and rested his head on the steering wheel, taking a deep breathe. He hated being that nervous around girls. He slipped his Blindside CD into the player and turned it up, driving toward his house to check in.
Once he was there, he walked into the house, past the dining room where his mom was having her tea. As he walked up the stairs, he threw his pack into "his room". It was a mess. His guitar and amp were the only things in place. He was never home, so it never got cleaned. He jumped in the shower, washed off and then went to change clothes. He pulled a pair of cargo shorts, and a billabong shirt out of the clean clothes on his bed and pulled them on. Going back down stairs he walked into the kitchen.
"Is that you Mikey?"
"Yeah, its me mum"
"How was the surf today?"
"Ok, 20 foot max." She didn't worry about me that much. She was an awesome mom. Back home, before she had met dad, she was a surfer chick, always at the parties, and being cool. Now she was sophisticated. Its not like Mike didn't like her, he just didn't have a reason to be around them. Besides, his dad always said it was good for him to live on his own.
He grabbed what was left of a meat sub and headed for the door. "I'm gonna be home late tonight."
"Where are you going."
"I don't know. I'm talking a friend from school out."
His mom came into the room. "Are you going out with a girl Michael."
Mike lowered his head, embaressed. "Yeah."
"Who is she?"
"Janette, a girl that i skate and surf with. Shes cool." His mom smiled.
"Well, its about time you got comfortable around girls. You're a handsom guy, you need a girl friend." Mike looked at her.
"Mum, we're just friends. I took her to the shop, we surfed, i asked if she wanted to hang out. Thats not girl friend/ boy friend activity, last time i checked." She just smiled and walked away.
'God, moms have a way of making things more then they are,' he thinks.
He gets in his car and drives back to the shop to work a couple hours before he heads for Janettes house.
