Jokes about Minorities...

I suggested no such thing. As was stated previously in this thread. IT IS A JOKE... JOKES ARE NOT TO BE TAKEN LITERALLY.

Telling a racist, ethnic, religious-slandering joke is just a means of entertainment, much like telling a joke about how a women belongs in the kitchen. They are just for shits and giggles, and SHOULD NOT be taken to heart as a means of demeaning the character of the group the joke is directed at.

If you want to take offence to the joke, that is your choice.

You quoted me replying to Arachnoidfreak. While doing so, I persumed you took the time to read the thread before you go off bleating about the same thing over and over again.

You suggested no such thing? I never said you have.

Your argument of ''its just a joke'' doesnt prove anything to me, nor does disprove what im saying. I agree - its a joke - its a joke through which racism has found a way to work - discreatly, without having people argue about it.

I never said you said I did. 😛 I was, however, pointing out that I do not agree that Racial slurs and anything of the nature should be made socially acceptable.

However, a joke that may poke fun of a stereotype and a racial slur ARE NOT the same thing.

If there is a point to your statement, I pray you will be getting to it sometime soon.

This entire discussion is based on opinion. One cannot prove anything about it except that some people find racial and ethnic jokes offensive.

Not with that attitude.

I think jokes about anything and everything are fine, as long as the reason for telling the joke isn't hate or malice.

How you determine that, however, is the harder part.

How very insightful, Raz. That is the point I have been trying to nail home for the last week or so.

clapping At least somebody here has some insight.

I think we need to acknowledge that racial jokes aren't something new nowadays. Look back for example at SNL shows of the 70's. There is a routine in which a white male and a black male engage in racial dispute. The black man gets called all sort of typical slurs by the white male and the black man retaliates with anglo slurs. The crowd despite being in shock still laughs and even applauded. Now, who were those two men who traded slurs with each other? None other than Steve Martin and the most recognize black comedian of all time.....Richard Prior.

Has anyone seen Barbershop? Is Cedric The Entertainer a Racist man for expressing his comment on Jesse Jackson and MLK Jr.? No, of course not! The black males despite the racist remarks made by the character of Cedric still manage to laugh at the comments. Doesn't that show that when it comes to humor we shouldn't be too proud and too uptight about ourselves. No one is inciting Racial discrimination agaisn't anyone. Is suppose to be joke and like it was mention earlier....jokes shouldn't be taken seriously. If they humor you laugh....if you don't find it funny ignore it.

So basically your argument is that the racism is wrong because its not sociably acceptable? So as long as you socially accpet KKK, no black people would ever get offended?

Heres the thing - you think and believe what you like - the racism in America is inherited and to be perfectly honest, after reading some of the replies here, its mind numbing.
You go on believing that if you make racism socially acceptable, noone will get offended, but dont come bitching when that attitude comes back and bites you in the ass (not you specifically but people who think like you, generally)

Im sure in the slave days in America, what has been done to the Black people has been socially acceptable, and im also sure none of the blacks were offended. Right.

Yea, see, here's the problem, you're taking JOKES, and comparing it to SLAVERY.

We don't live in 1800, now do we? Racism will be a thing of the past, but only when people stop being offended. They need to realize when something is a joke, and when it isn't. Slavery was a violent form of racism, and unacceptable, that's why it isn't around anymore. You don't see riots breaking out because someone said Puertoricans love beans and rice and stealing hubcaps.

As long as we are laughing at and accepting our differences, and not killing each other over them, what's the problem?

You put words in my mouth, and it doesn't help your argument. Why are you comparing violent hate to HUMOR??

Not with that attitude.

Be as optimistic as you like, but you cannot prove an opinion. 🙂

thats not necessaruly the politcally correct thing to do depending on your views..look at republicans and there views on gay marriage.

just because racial jokes are on tv dont mean were not PC...thats tv not the real world....a white person cant say the same jokes as a black person, a black person cant tell a joke about a jewish person, you cant flirt with a girl because you might get slapped with a sexual harrassment suit...of course people do all these things if they know the people there with and those people can take a joke but you if you do these things at a party or at work you can get fired

Not entirely true. If you're a member of the U.S. Supreme Court, you can damn near do anything you want without fear of losing your job. Old Clarence Thomas, the court's resident "expert" on pornography (his porno movie collection is probably second to none), routinely engages in
such behavior. He actually goes up to women and describes scenes from porno flicks he has watched. Now that's class...I wouldn't doubt if the clod hasn't given Barbara Bush a blow-by-blow description (no pun intended) of "Debbie Does Dallas."

All of which reminds me of the 1976 movie "Taxi Driver," where Robert DeNiro "treats" Cybill Shepherd to a porno movie for their first date. And where did you go for your first date? one of her friends might ask. Cybill: "Oh, Travis, the dear, took me to a porno flick! (Sigh). What a romantic!"

i'm somewhat familar with clarence thomas but he did almost get fired....the supreme court voted 52 to 48 for him to keep his job...how he didnt get fired is beyond me

But still... poking fun of such incidents is funny. Or am I wrong?

Clarence Thomas was a federal judge who was nominated to the U.S. Supreme Court by the first President Bush. I believe he was confirmed by the Senate in a 52-48 vote. Here in Illinois, former Senator Alan Dixon (D) voted to confirm Thomas, and that vote cost him his job as he was later beaten in the Democratic primary by Carol Moseley Braun, who mobilized women voters who did not like Clarence Thomas and his predilection for porn and sexual harassment. In order to remove a Supreme Court justice from the bench, impeachment proceedings would have to be instigated. That's so rare, wuTa, that you and I would probably have a better chance of hitting it big in the lottery. The bottom line: Supreme Court justices can pretty well do whatever they want.

which is one of many reasons why this country needs a direct democracy

Amen to that...

Thanks wuTa.....and you're very right it was Chevy Chase and not Steve Martin. But man! Richard Prior was awesome! 😄

that was one of the, if not THE funniest sketch ever put on tv...sometimes i catch priors stand-up late at night on comedy central and i laugh just as hard as i do the 1st time i saw it....that joke about him being on fire and the match joke....priceless
