Shin Godzilla. Kinda weird, TBH.

Holy shit, that was one of the stupidest parts of that movie.

Advanced technology to travel through worm holes and visit distant planets, but they couldn't see the enormous waves from space before landing on the planet?

That movie sucked. Nolan's big space epic that took place in a corn field.

??

Are you aware of what time dilation is and what someone in space looking down on a planet that is moving at a significant percentage of the speed of light would see?

If you know the answer to that, then you'd know that that scene made perfect sense...

The movie was awesome for those of us that could appreciate it...

So the world's crops were dying out because of some disease...

So they go to space...to build a habitable, environmentally controlled space station/city...in essence a giant glass house.

Uummm why didn't they just build multiple glass houses on Earth to grow their crops?

It's been a while since I've seen it, but I'm pretty sure they were through the worm hole already and were looking at the planet. I don't think there was any time dilation at that point.

Good question. Because they needed to save Matt Damon? 😕

Life (2017) 8/10

Criticism against this film usually falls on the similarities between this and the obvious influences of Alien and Gravity. This film has its flaws namely being lack of character development, poor choices by the "brilliant" scientists, and perhaps too much reliance on the alien (which looks suspiciously like the Facehuggers in earlier incarnations/a Dumbo octopus) aren't without merit. Separating the critical aspects I loved this movie in much the same vein as Sunshine as a scifi/horror film. Visuals borrowing heavily from Gravity are as always mesmerizing, even if the sights of crashed Space station parts and floating white debris is hardly original. Gyllenhall's relationship with the commander shows a human side in the face of an extraterrestrial threat, and in spite of a lack of exposition their bond reminded me heavily of what any two individuals faced with certain death would do (Bond in a final moment), and try to make the best of their plight. All and all even though the movie treads familiar ground, a fan of Alien can do no wrong here and its a great flick to catch on a late night.

Mystic River (2003) 10/10

Another movie where Sean Penn plays an incredibly violent gangster, Mystic River adds in a setting that conjures similarly of the Town, At Close Range, and Stir of Echoes. 3 boys (Sean, Jimmy, David) linked by a car that kidnapped Tim Robbin's character links these childhood friends as a matter of psychological trauma with lingering consequences. While the three all have different paths in life a murder of Jimmy's daughter reunites the three in a tale of deceit, murder, and their shared past. Sean Penn as always walks the line of being reserved but always brimming with anger towards his loss, and Sean while the most successful of the three does his best to remain detached but remains linked by their childhoods. Without spoiling the tail captures a believable smalltown vibe, with great dialogue, interesting twists and turns, and an incredible cast.

Beauty and the Beast (2017) 8/10

Continuing the trend of Live action (Re?)-adaptations Beauty and the Beast is for all purposes more or less the same as the cartoon. Like the Jungle book before it (though perhaps less so), a bit more care is added to Belle's backstory, more emphasis on learning about the couple's time together, and giving Gaston more background. Some of these newer additions work like Beast using his mirror to explore Belle's past life, and any sort of exposition to make their relationship work is welcome for fans of the cartoon. Lumiere, Cogsworth, and the other humanized objects for me, were the best part of the film and added warmth and humor more so than the original cartoon. A few flaws mainly being Emma Watson's singing ability is subpar, the newer songs aren't very memorable, and Gaston's end was kind of weak. But I would be lying if I said I didn't enjoy watching this!

Power Rangers (2017) 6.5/10

Growing up with the show in the nineties and revisiting it reveal the property as having aged like smelly cheese. I remember being ecstatic when the movie came out in 1995, and now as a man revisiting the movie a certain feeling of satisfaction occurs when he movie (At least on a few levels) succeeds. What works is that Billy and Jason are actual characters, no mention or pity is taken for Billy's autism he simply does what he does and Jason seems like a natural leader. The other characters may be less memorable and their explanations for being at the quarry are Highly suspect. Essentially, the reveal of the coins, motivations, and Repulsa appearing are happy accidents that will shatter your ability to believe their occurrence. Banks steals the show as Rita with her accent, kitschy acting, and over the top mannerisms. I had a lot of fun watching her kick the kid's asses, and even though Goldar sucked the final fight scenes were solid. Its by no means a perfect film but hell anything is an improvement over the 1995 film/show

Contagion (2011) 10/10

Good Will Hunting (1997) 10/10

A whole bunch of 6/10s:

Monster Trucks (2016) 6/10.

Is it great? No. But is it fun? Yes. It won't win any Oscars and I would never have paid to go and see it at a theater, but for sitting at home and and watching a silly movie about monster trucks it's good entertainment.

Headshot (2016) 6/10.

Can't really compare to The Raid, despite the many reviews I've read comparing the two. It's by no means a bad movie, it's just not very good, either. Apart from a few good action scenes the plot is fairly predictable and while the actors are all competent, none of them deliver a stand-out performance.

All-Nighter (2017) 6/10.

If it wasn't for JK Simmons I doubt I would have bothered watching this. As it is, even he can't really lift this formulaic rom-com to anything more than an occasional chuckle. It's not that it's horrible - it's just so bland. It's as if somebody read a book called How To Make Rom-Com Movie: It feels as if everything was done by the numbers, with very little heart.

You didn't find some inconsistencies with the creature? At first it needed less oxygen to be revived and then

Spoiler:
later on it survived (flourished!) outside the space station in the vacuum of space, but then later it was reliant on oxygen so they lured it and trapped it with oxygen.
They changed things to be convenient for the plot. Got on my nerves.

I loved the film, but that shit ruined it for me. It's like a creationist wrote the script... lol. So I found the film very frustrating.

Oh, I did watch Fist of Legend (1994).

Jet Li is a beast. There's some great fights in it, but ultimately the film is a bit dated (too many over-the-top sound effects that make it sort of unintentionally funny). And I was actually hoping there would be fewer cuts with long shots of the fight choreography. There wasn't quite as much of that as I was hoping. But it's worth a watch anyway.

The Secret in Their Eyes. Pretty good.

Vampires (1998)

John Carpenter. Actually a pretty decent little action/horror flick. Very old school and enjoyable. I had caught most of it on TV years and years ago and remembered sort of enjoying it, so decided to catch an uncut version all the way through. Recommended.

Power Rangers
7/10
As expected a great serious action fantasy movie that has the right mix of serious but also light hearted funny stuff.
A formidable pure evil Villain that does most of her dirty work, 5 strangers having to become a team lots of growing pains including needing to discover how to morph into their armor suits plus know each other and rely on each other which is most of the drama.

Great action, use of original theme at the best time, terrific exciting high stakes climax, easter eggs, line and lines that make it obvious sequel and sequels, and a after credits scene likely where the sequel will start. Cameos of familiar persons of the original power rangers tv show, flawed believable relatable characters including Rita Repulsa, and astounding product placement maybe more than any other movie.
It's related to the plot but still astounding.

^^^Good call.
It was s good book, too.

Sausage Party

Blood Diamond (2006)

Finally got around to seeing it cause I was laying around sick all day. Great performances from Djimon Hounsou, Leo Dicaprio, and Jennifer Connolly. Felt like the film could have used a bit more editing to cut out some excess, but a very powerful and disturbing subject that definitely demands exposure.

Ghost in the Shell has apparently bombed at the box office lol.

Yeah, I picked up the dvd a few months ago at the dollar store. Sometimes they have some good stuff. I also found another Carpenter film "They Live" which is good.

Magnificent Seven w. Denzel/Pratt.

Yeah, I still want to see it at some point. I may not get around to it in time to help it much at the box office, though.

Is They Live any good? Carpenter is sort of hit or miss to me. The Thing is good, just sort of a non-ending to me, I found Escape From New York to be a bit dated, and Ghosts of Mars is horrible, lol..

Its cheesy fun.
