Superman is the worst character EVER.

Superman

When I was a kid I couldn't stand Superman because 1) he had a silly costume, 2) he was waaayyy too powerful, 3) the stories were often silly, and 4) DC just didn't do enough character development back then.
Nowadays, Superman has become my 2nd favorite character because 1) you can go anywhere in the civilized world, tie a towel around your neck or put your hands out in front of you, and everyone will know who you are talking about. He was The First Superhero (jeez, the genre was named after him), the superhero's Superhero; he is an icon with real-world power, the power to inspire ("There is a hero in all of us" Aunt May, Spiderman 2), inspire us to be the best that human beings can be. I think it was Wonder Woman who responded thusly (when someone else brought up how Superman has all this power, yet he always seeks to do The Right Thing), "THAT's what makes him Superman." 2) He's not as powerful as he used to be and has more personality these days, even if it is BoyScoutish.
For what it's worth, however, he does have a silly costume, though only Superman could get away with it.

He's slowly being repowered to stupid levels again. Soul vision???

I think he's alright in the right stories. The drama in Superman always comes from the decisions he has to make. He can do anything, but only one anything at a time 🙂

Oh come on people stop the nonsense! Whoever says Superman is uncool or impractical or that he sucks is because HE/SHE has never picked up one of his comics. Superman is an awesome character. I have many years collecting his books. I've seen bad, good and great stories based on him. When written properly Superman is the coolest character in comics. Superman is way too easy to write. When you do stories about him you won't speak about the things he can do. For it to work you have to speak about the things he can't do. The good Superman's stories are those which speak about moral dilemmas and emotional struggles. Those with enemies that can't be punched in the face and get done with. A writer who says he can't write Superman is a bad writer.

Superman is very cool. He's so likable. I love his current incarnation, where he isn't such a great boy scout, and makes mistakes. He isn't that smart, and has a crushing weakness - naivity. It takes the likes of Batman to point it out, and sometimes it takes more level headed heroes to stop Superman from making huge mistakes. I love the little flaws in his character, it balances him out. His current character can sometimes struggle with controlling his own power and keeping tabs on his own emotions. He's an ordinary human, in essence, who has had to house these rediculously powerful gifts all his life. He knows he could bring the world to its knees and it scares him a little.

He sometimes lacks the confidence of say, Batman, who is a total master of his surroundings and his abilities. It's great to see a contrast of character.

On the surface, Superman seems shallow. An over-powerred goodie two shoes. But recently, the character has evolved and changed, and is now incredibly deep, interesting and more importantly, fun.

Supes rocks.

soul vision... some people claim your soul is simply an aura around your body that is in a different spectrum to what the human eye can see... superman has always had incredibly enhanced vision... not so unbelievable... 😛

Well, when he was created in 1938, I'm pretty sure Siegal (sorry for the mis-spelling) and Schuster weren't thinking about fashion sense 67 years in the future, part of Superman looking cool or not in the costume is in the artist's hands, Jim Lee, Mike Turner, Ed McGuinness and Joel Schuster defined how Superman looked in the comics with their styles, thus putting a real life person into the costume would look some-what rediculous. Reeve, god rest his soul, barely pulled off the costume, he was spot-on with Superman, there's no question there, he was born for Superman and there's no way they'll ever find anyone better (I do have faith in Routh that he'll be a believable Superman) but the costume doesn't exactly scream "threatening" (like Bale's Batsuit, but that's another topic) So, no matter who they put in the costume (including Welling), no matter which version of the costume they go with (they didn't "change" the costume like so many of you proclaim) it will still look a little weird, that's just how it is. I will admit I was a little bothered by the maroon red and the "S" on the belt, but now that I've actually seen some footage of Routh in the costume, it's starting to grow on me, I'm giving it a chance, as I think the movie deserves one.

Super Man is too impractical, even for a super heroe. He's armed with so many powers it's just pointless. He's nearly invincible. He reminds me of that episode of South Park where they make up their own characters and say 'I want to have this power and that power etc.' In all honesty, it seems as if Super Man was made by a little kid who knows nothing of balance or the word 'practical'.

How many recent superman stories have you actually read???
He's recently beaten LOADS of villains much more powerful than himself

That was SCARY, when he said "im looking at your soul"

Superman was (if im not mistaken) created by a Jew during the 1930's.
So when you think about it, the entire charachter is a metaphor for the persecution of the jews.
Think about it. There is a great ancient civilization, which is about to be destroyed by forces beyond its own control, and they dont have the ability to escape. THey send one child away to be orphanned so that he is able to survive elsewhere, so that he may live.
I wonder if there was actually a jewish evaccuee who was the original inspiration of the superman charachter

Everyone always says that Superman is overpowered. then they turn around and in the next thread say that their favorite hero would be able to kick supes ass. How does that make sense?

Listen. The Hulk is insanely powerful. So is Wonder Woman and Jean Grey and about seven million other superheroes. The point of superheroes is never whether or not they can punch a bad guy hard enough to knock them out, it's the moral dillemas they face in doing so. When superman is written well, he is often more vulnerable and human that Batman is, despite all his superpowers.

Every hero has an 'idea' that the writers have to capitalize on when they're writing that particular hero. Batmans idea is that of a man driven to the brink by childhood trauma, the Hulk is a creature of absolute emotion gone wild.

Supermans is the idea of what would a person do if the power of god was dropped into his lap.

My favorite hero (look @ my sig) would get his a$$ beat by Supes. Put Supes in a VS. thread VS someone who he outclasses and I'll vote for him (with a heavy heart🙁 ) Many Supes fan(boy)s seem like they can't admit, even when the odds are extremely stacked against him in some threads, that he'd lose. Take Supes VS. the Silver Surfer. With Surfer's powerset(includes cosmic awareness, radiation of all types, including red sun and Kryptonite after the awareness tells him of Superman's weaknesses) it seems like he was made for the sole purpose of beating Supes down. Yet many fanboys hate the idea of him losing so much they bulls**t their way around the fact that Supes is clearly outclassed.

You obviously havn't spent much time READING superman comics. If you had, you would realise that he often faces opponants with FAR more power than him. He isn't the all-powerful all-knowing charachter that marvel fanboys like to think that he is. Superman does have lots more powers than most other superheroes, but he also has very simple weaknesses, and he has faced opponants far more powerful than he is. He also has far more responsability than othersuperheroes, and has a much larger willpower than most other superheroes. In conclusion:

SUPES RULES!!!

uhhhhhhhhhh...NO i wouldnt be ever caught dead reading a superman comic lmao and yes he does have corny powers but a much larger willpower??!! are you kidding me, all he does is fly through the air n go weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee im superman im gay..... i mean, hows he gunna have the most mental willpower when physically he can do just about everything..stop earthquakes the size of california with his bare hands, make the world go back in time by circling it...i mean wtf
heat vision tornado breath super hearing, invulnerability....what the hell man and it doesnt matter how hard his foes are cuz u already know he will win...i mean he's superman! so in conclusion theres no suspense as to what you think is gunna happen, its not at all realistic or believable, his weakness or his infallibility is too predictable..(kriptonyte) so theres no suspense there either...its not interesting nor does it get you drawn into the story......thats y i like someone like batman or punisher more, because theyre human and theyre fallible and its more interesting to see as to how they achieve whats necessary...not just have bullets bounce off your chest while ur blastin a criminal with your heat vision hahaha

so basically.....IMO hes just a super hero for toddlers .....especially cuz of his super suit....its like blue and red pajamas 😘

You admit to never reading a superman comic, and yet you ASSUME to know what superman is like. Post crisis supes is NOT all-powerful. He is the most powerful man on earth, but his villains are often WAY more powerful than him. He does have a much larger willpower, as he never uses his powers irresponsibly, and nobody has ever broken his will. I remember not too long ago when Gog totally beat the crap out of superman and kept him prisonner for several hundred years of torture, but supes still refused to be broken, and when he was sent back in time he still refused to make the wrong decision even though it would have been the only way to avoid centuries of captivity. I cant imagine many marvel charachters doing that.
And BTW, post-crisis supes hasnt travelled back in time very often at all.
ANd as for the remarks about superman being gay and only for toddlers, well that just proves how ignorant and immature you are. You havn't even read a superman comic, so how the hell would you know what he is like.
He might be the most powerful man on earth, but that also means that he has a tremendous responsibility.
You mentionned that it doesnt matter how much more powerful his villains are, supes would still win. But how many times recently have marvel charachters lost in their own comics. I know superman has been beaten several times within the last couple of years.
Come back when you grow up and have a better understanding of the topic

Frankly, he's just not very interesting... as I've already stated I don't think he's the worst hero ever, but I don't see how he should be considered the best. All the reasons given are pretty superficial. He's the first? So? So was the Wright Brother's plane. He's powerful? So? Powers don't make the character. Imo if anything overpowered characters are less interesting. He's responsible? So? That's nothing special, and most characters are responsible with their powers without ending up with a "vanilla personality". Imo he's middleground, not dogfood, but not steak, hamburger maybe.

You should read some of his recent storylines. He's awesome

More powerful villains? Are you busting my balls here? His rogues gallery is mostly humans or meta-humans for gods sake.

As seen here:

Oh no! it's the Prankster! With the superhuman power to...um...make pranks...🙁

And

😱 Mercy?? She has slightly above human strength! NOOOOO.....!!!

And

It's hope! She also has slightly above human strength! Superman with his billion ton lifting and light speed moving abilities are no match for her!

Seriously, D.C is in a horrible place to make comics right now, they can't depower their characters, because their fans will riot. They can't power up the villains, because the fans can't comprehend Superman losing. So they rely 100% on Plot Induced Stupidity (Slade stabbing Flash...Anytime Superman loses) and Character Induced Stupidity(Flash getting k.o'd by normal humans, WW getting slapped around by Slade) to make stories.

D.C should just stop superman/batman/wonderwoman comics for a few years and just use the peripheral characters......like Orion: Dog of War 😈 Who owns Superman any day of the week.

Your forgetting Luthor, Doomsday, Cyborg Supes, Brainiac...

and why should they depower characters?
