Superman has too much power for what he does, which is fight thugs and 5 ton lifting meta humans.
In cosmic sense i.e Surfer, Thanos, Heralds, Genis etc. He's a common wussy.
But, ya know...we can't have Superman fight in his own league, or...-gasp- he may lose! nooo, we can't have that at all!! The Superman fanboys would riot, sue D.C for mental pain and cry themselves into a deep, deep depression.
So, let's have him fight another human and all the Superfans can bust one in their superman printed panties.

Is Superman overpowered? Perhaps in precrisis comic books, and in some movies...
He does have a personality.. Sure he does..It is very clear in 80's, 90's and 2000's comic books, and in the animated series and Smallville. Even in some of the movies... He's the good southern farm boy, with strong principles and ethics, with good hearth... most of the time holding his powers afraid to hurt people. He could be the opposite to batman.. ya know Bruce is sophisticated, smart. Also with strong principles and ethics, but a little overconfident, paranoic, and mean with the bad guys..
Is Supes an Icon? Sure he is...
Is he a model that Marvel has desperately tried to imitate, creating similar characters? Yes.. Champion, Hulk, Gladiator, Juggernaut, etc..
Are Marvel cosmic beings ridiculously overpowered? Hell Yes!!
Even more than Supes? Hell Yeah!!
Do they have personality of their own? No... good guys are all equal... Bada guys are the same... Note I'm talking about the ridiculous overpowered Cosmic beings as Thanos, Terrax, SS, etc...
Long Pig: I see you love Marvel Comics.. Right? I like some of their characters too... But cosmic beings are just ridiculous... Supes is not my favorite, but he's a good character... and you have to respect the icon.. As someone said before: "No supes, No comic books, no Marvel".

But, no...I don't have to respect an Icon because he's an Icon. That's partly the reason why Superman comics suck so hard. D.C figures "Hey, it's Superman...he's an Icon, they'll buy it even if the story is ass!".
After reading page after page of everybody's rants and raves I'm just going to address the topic "Superman is the worst character EVER" by saying that I disagree. Superman is NOT the worst character EVER. I'd say there are a lot of other characters worse than Superman. Let me name just a few...Blue Devil, Booster Gold, Rocket Red, Speedball, Captain Boomerang....the list of lame characters is endless. I'm no Superman fan, but I wouldn't put him on the same list as the others I've mentioned.

This is not what you originally were talking about... You were talking about the character itself... not about the way some stories are written.... Yes, in all the superman's years some stories have been dumb, even ridiculous, but most part have been at least readable. This is not an exclusive Superman's issue. All characters have had their bad days in comic books, movies or any other media, like Batman in the 60's or the superfriends. (Well, all about these was dumb, but it was kind of funny and entertaining).
I have given an answer to some of your thoughts about Superman being the worst character ever... and you didn't even notice that and change the topic to superman's poorly written stories..
If you hate Superman that much, so why bothering in starting a thread about him? I dislike Marvel Cosmic beings, so I never start a thread about them...
Superman is not my fave character, and I do think that he has too many powers, but he is far from the WORST character!
Not because he was the first, and therefore inspired other superheroes, as far as Im concerned that has no effect on the standard of his character, but because he upholds the morals and ideals that all comic superheroes try to live up to.
He is an icon because he is an icon , not just for being the first.... Say what you will about Superman, even if you dont like him, there are a hell of a lot of worse characters out there and you have to at least respect a character who's survived so long as a popular character.

I don't remember if I posted in this thread earlier but I changed my mind anways so....
I don't find Superman as disgusting anymore, in fact he is an alright hero in my opinion. Since I didn't pick up a Superman comic in ages I dont know what he did for the last few years but thinking aboot it his comics weren't as bad...so, although he is no Batman I respect him.

'In cosmic sense i.e Surfer, Thanos, Heralds, Genis etc. He's a common

Ok !
Surfer has been beaten twice by Thor
Terrax may ed an ass out of himself against Sentry
Genis looked pretty lame against Hyperion
Thor has problems against elves, giants and Trolls
Hyperion has been beaten by Gladiator who has been beaten by the Hulk and Thor
And Terrax has been Thrown through buildings by the Thing.
I think claiming that Superman is a 'wussy' compared to these so called 'cosmic' characters is a bit well .... Garbage !!!!!!!!!
With exception of Sentry, Superman has demonstrated feats far beyond these 'Cosmic' characters .... he has also beaten opponents who are superior (I.e. Darksied, Cyborg, Asmodel, Preus, Gog ) .... Also note that many of these characters have been beaten by Superman type characters
I agree that these 'Cosmic' beings could beat supes .... But to suggest that he is a 'wuss' compared to them is ludicrous !
"With exception of Sentry, Superman has demonstrated feats far beyond these 'Cosmic' characters ...."
Nope.
"he has also beaten opponents who are superior (I.e. Darksied, Cyborg, Asmodel, Preus, Gog ) "
Superior to who? Surtur? Ymir? Tyrant? infinity?
Those you mentioned arent, post crisis speaking on a level of Surtur. And thats only one.
"I agree that these 'Cosmic' beings could beat supes .... But to suggest that he is a 'wuss' compared to them is ludicrous !"
Agreed.

Gladiator is not similar... is like a Superman's clone. The others have at least one characteristic, power or background similar to Supes in some way or another...

Superman has nothing but some strength, some mid level speed and low-mid level energy output. A common wuss compared to cosmics.

Around most cosmics, he's nothing more than a strong man with very passive powers. No telepathy, no offensive TK, no molecular manipulation, no magic, nothing. He's a wuss, man.

That's your problem.

PIS PISPISPIS
Same thing happened on New Genesis, he's considered "normal" around them because they are all super human powered.

Do you know the difference between a fact and an opinion ? 🙂

Do you the difference between a facts and an opinion ? All you've done is stated a load of opinions without giving any facts to back them up ! 🙂
For example
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
Copying this sign over and over again does not make your opinion a fact !
Writing PIS three times also does not make your opinion a fact !
When all is said and done, it all comes down to this...
Never mind the real-world, inspirational power Superman has as The Icon, a power no other hero has, or ever will have. Other Superheroes look up to The Icon. He is the superhero's Superhero.
I now permit the rantings of those who dissent to resume.
Superman is definately an Icon, but calling him the most powerful superhero of all time is a load of sh*t. A lot of people can name stronger, faster, more powerful, and deadlier beings in the comic universe than Superman. Thor, Silver Surfer, Thanos, Galactus, Doctor Strange, Beta Ray Bill, Sentry, Tyrant, Superboy Prime, Doomsday, and so forth. However, he's an estabilshed icon, which is saying a lot. Most people 20 or older, when you say superhero, the first word they think is Superman. The rest usually think Spider-Man. However, calling Superman the most powerful superhero ever is just plain ignorant.

This is true, but what does that have to do with his character, according to the thread starter.
