I still don't believe Star Wars is intentionally 'stylised' to look cartoony... I think Speilberg is just a better director than Lucas. He uses CG only when he needs to.And the CG work in War of the Worlds is, for the most part, stunning. As of the films this year so far, my vote would go to WOTW.
Off-topic: what did everyone think of WotW's visual effects (or the film in general)?
Yeah, I kinda see what you're saying... Lucas could have gone for ultra-realism, but didn't. I just like the way Speilberg uses CG...
I thought the FX were great. Of course there were some bad shots, but nothing major. I've seen the film twice now... and I still like it. It has it's problems though... It feels like a cross between a good popcorn flick and a serious film. It doesn't really fit into either category, which I think is its downfall. I think there should have been more character develpment (there was much room for it, but I don't think all the time was spent wisely - though there are some terrific scenes). I just felt like something was missing. But still a highly enjoyable film. It'll be one to add to my DVD collection for sure.

In 1999 Phantom Menace lost to the Matrix and in 2002 Attack of the Clones lost to The Two Towers. Something tells me they'll give it to War of the Worlds. That's Lucas' big competition this year.
