magneto would have to cut off all access to the sun.

except that it wouldn't, as it's already been tried, and it failed. that happened on panel, and is canon.

He doesn't need to do just that. Mags can clearly see that Superman absorbs yellow sunlight and its good for him. Mags cans change and manipulate em energy therefore he could change yellow sunlight into something like anti-sunlight. This would probably involve in 'reversing' the properties of yellow sunlight.

But it's a comic book so whatever.

Applying real life physics to comic books only works to a certain extent.

It is relevant. Because I've read every one of his appearances, and I don't need somebody who is versed in the character through the animation series and forum scans to tell me what he can and can't do, and whether or not I'm underestimating him.
