Thank you. When I say METAL, I mean everything from Iron Maiden, Metallica, Judas Priest, Slayer and Ozzy to Cannibal Corpse, Deicide, Pantera, Clutch, and even Slipknot, for the younger fans (not that I dont like slipknot). If you like bands like Oasis, Offspring, and all that, its certainly your perogative. but I hardly think those are basis for loving METAL music. but then again I, myself, was heavily influenced by the Ramones, Sex Pistols and the Misfits.
But the title asks, "Who started your love of METAL?". Odd as it may seem, I used to like Linkin Park, and from there I started listening to heavier (and not as heavy but still better) music. I can't stand them now, but they were the first band in the "progression" that got me interested in metal.
Though if we're only allowed to list metal bands... These were the first few:
SOAD
Korn
RATM
In Flames

Well, no. You may list any band you want to. But I would think that if you love today's METAL music, then an earlier metal band or a classic rock group would have influenced you to like the music you listen to now. I mean, I grew up listening to my dad's music like The Doors, Eagles, Grateful Dead, Skynyrd, Hendrix, Floyd, C.C.R., etc, etc. But when I was 12 years old and still clueless as to what music moved me the most, the bands that made me realize that I LOVE metal are Pantera, Type O, Sepultura, Fear Factory, Ramones, Misfits, etc etc. If you have an earlier influence who is not neccessarily metal, by all means tell us. I would love to hear it. 😉
It all started off with black sabbath, believe or not when i was about 3!
then when i was a young teenager, maybe 15, i started getting proporly into music, and thats when i first discovered Korn. From there on i discovered all my favourites, like metallica, slayer, dream theater, iron maiden, pantera, all that stuff.
so my overview, Black sabbath was the original band that got me into metal age 3, and Korn was who opened my eyes to music age 15

Well no, I sorta went backwards, like I already said, I started with crappy modern pop-rock stuff like LP and blink. Then, I bought SOAD's "Toxicity" and pretty soon after that "Issues" by Korn... 😄
The band that probably got me into metal was Deep Purple's "Deep Purple In Rock" and "Machine Head". They are obviously highly influential in creating it and I started looking at the bands they influenced because I liked the stylings. So I pretty much followed the history of metal, first NWOBHM with Iron Maiden's "Number of the Beast" being the first truly metal album I dug. Then I went into the next progression, which was speed metal where I started to dig Cacophony and Helloween. That took me down three roads:
1) Cacophony into thrash with Metallica, then into harder thrash like Slayer and Kreator which led to my liking of some death metal (though very selective), especially Hypocrisy.
2) Cacophony's technicality is what pushed me into progressive metal, where Queensryche's "Operation Mindcrime" probably being the first metal album I truly loved and really made me focus more on metal. This led to Dream Theater, Porcupine Tree, Spiral Architect and the like.
3) Helloween's "Walls of Jericho" brought my liking of power metal with bands like Blind Guardian and Symphony X.
My five favourite metal albums with my traditional feelings in mind are probably in no order:
Anacrusis - Screams and Whispers
Megadeth - Rust in Peace
Metallica - Ride the Lightning
Cacophony - Speed Metal Symphony
Spiral Architect - Sceptic's Universe
White Zombie - La Sexorcisto: Devil Music, Vol. 1
Rob Zombie - Hellbilly Deluxe
System of A Down - Toxicity
PanzerChrist - Soul Collector
Slayer - God Hates Us All and Reign in Blood
As a kid, my Dad and I always listened to White Zombie, as far as I remember, it was a band I loved. And when they split, I think I liked Rob Zombie even more.
In middle school, I really liked System of A Down's Toxicity, I think I borrowed that from my dad without asking.
Then PanzerChrist and Slayer were the two bands that got me into the harder stuff. My dad gave me two CDs when I was in 7th grade I believe, God Hates Us All and Soul Collector. I hated both at first, but then I grew to love them just a year after.
Really have to think about this one.
First time I really encountered metal was when I was about 12 years old. I was at one of my friend's houses. The guy was into hiphop but he owned some 'The best of Iron Maiden' CD. I liked it more than any of the cd's he owned. So he gave it to me, because he never listened to it anyway.
