Who started your love of METAL?

When I was 5 or so, I had a tape I stole from my aunt with Slayer, Metallica, Iron Maiden, and Mercyful Fate on it.

I remember getting a CD when I was in Denmark as a kid that had Darkthrone, Schattenheer, Celtic Frost, and some other now old school black metal stuff at a magazine stand in Odense. I came back to the US pretty much thinking I was the meanest motherf*cker in elementary school because I had that...

After that, I just kinda didn't listen to music for awhile, then I caught the buzz that was surrounding some of the Nu Metal bands that came out of no where (namely Slipknot), and I decided to dig out some of my old black metal stuff from Denmark and Germany and pick up where I left off.

All in all, I'm pretty sure Mercyful fate is what got me stuck to metal.

I'll me honest, I got into metal through the Nu Metal stuff. I'm not sure why it has such a bad rep. Sure, it's a bastardized form of metal, but it's the gateway drug for so many metalheads, today.

Gargh you are ridiculous.

I got into metal through Iron Maiden's song "Two Minutes to Midnight"...

Then my tastes in metal grouped into a basic category, the 80s... From there, it branched off into 3 separate groups...

NWOBHM: Iron Maiden, Angel Witch, Saxon, etc.

Thrash Metal: Metallica, Megadeth, Anthrax, Testament, etc.

Hair Metal: Motley Crue, Ratt, Skid Row, Black N Blue, etc.

(Note: This is the classification of the bands in the 80s, NOT TODAY, which explains Metallica in the thrash section)

Metal.......Ugh.

Anata wa wakarimasu ka.....

DAMN, SHE'S TALKING IN JAPANESE! I ONLY KNOW THE BASICS OF JAPANESE!

Well, I guess it was my aunt and my mate who did it for me. My aunt is majorly into Metallica, and my mate is a big time Linkin Park fan (I know it's not true metal, but it is a form). They both always have those two bands playing when I'm around, so I just grew to like the sound.

Well, Impediment pretty much set the standard for his own thread by stating 5 metal bands albums. If this were Df's thread, then I'd understand.

wow, I never came back to this thread after I posted, didnt really my post caused such a stir.

why didnt the thread creator call this the 'name the first metal bands you liked' thread?

If it was, i'd have said;
Will Haven (not technically metal, but whatever)

First i listened very often to Acdc and Rage against the machine. Then i started to listen to Metallica, Iron Maiden, Motörhead and so on. But now i don't like this kind of music anymore and listen to house and electro.

I'm not a HUGE metal fan, however I started to dig the genre and like it around 10th grade. It was after being forced to listen to it at a Band of the Battles gig at my school. They were all shit, and what my friends liked (Slipknot, etc) didn't turn me on, but I was interested in technicality and skill and by that point I started to like to it. Albums that got me liking metal I suppose are The Wretched Spawn by Cannibal Corpse, Killers by Iron Maiden, Reign In Blood by Slayer, Peace Sells...But Who's Buying? Megadeth were initals starts. Although I don't have much metal in my collection an album I can contribute to moving me into the metal genre is Nevermind by Nirvana. Whilst not a metal album, it was the first time I really started to dig those "heavier" rockier sounds.

Well, I don't love metal, per se. But, if there is anyone that really peaked my interest in this genre it's Metallica and Anthrax (a little).

I have to give credit for very early inspirations such as Metallica, Megadeth, Iron Maiden and Ozzy. Also hair metal bands like Poison, Ratt, and Twisted Sister. My older cousins grew up listening to these groups and I dug them.

Mine started with:

Alice In Chains
Black Sabbath
Metallica
Iron Maiden
ACDC

My dad brought us, my sister and I, up listening to this kind of music. It was definitley a big inspiration in our lives and our love for music.

I didnt ever hear Pantera till I was about 18, shocking.

The first technical Metal I started listening to was Nu-Metal, and the first band I liked was Linkin Park(still one of my favorites, my fav. song by them is Crawling, no I'm not emo). Other Nu-Metal bands I like are Slipknot(Duality and Before I Forget are my favorite songs by them), and Korn. I then started listening to more, like Drowning Pool, System of a Down, Rob Zombie, Tool(they can kinda be considered Metal), Metallica, Rammstein(once I am done learning German, I will finally know wtf they are talkin about lol) among others. I guess the band that started it tho was Linkin Park, and they will always have a special place in my heart. 😄

Seventh Son of a Seventh Son, by Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, etc...

My first metal album was Iron Maiden Stranger in a strange land.
I still remember the day I bought it, the LP, it was the 80s 🙂 And when I heard it at night.
Then we, becoz my brother started to be fan after I got this album, get some other Iron Maiden albums, and other heavy metal bands and albums, and so I started.

So I can say I started to be a metal fan for Iron Maiden.

iv always liked metal but of late iv been loving metal
my love of metal started with iron maiden then i started listening to static x and anthrax 😄

black sabbath and blue oyster cult is was where i started. although i didn't start to get into any metal until the 90's. give me a break, i was born in the 80's.

i got really big into nu-metal, particularly mushroomhead and fear factory (among others which are too numerous to list really).

more recently i've been listening to nothing but metal bands from europe of every sub-genre. i.e. sonata arctica, blind guardian, dragonforce, and firewind just to name a few.

i guess you didn't ask me all that but, it's too late now ain't it *****? 😱

Im not a huge metal head, but my metal band I got into was megadeth...then Dream Theater.

Knowing your preferences I'm going to guess Rust in Peace era Megadeth.
