I thought it was one of the better episodes so far this season. Pretty happy with it, and I'm liking Smith more and more as time goes on.

Oh it was, which is why it's such a shame thet dropped the ball that much at the end.

Oh, so you were being sarcastic.

I liked the ending, personally.

Incidentally, the first half of Hide was so much of a homage to the classic Nigel Kneale story The Stone Tape

I too noticed that, the screaming ghost, the house used by American's in WW2 & the spam... 😂

Not too keen on the monster part of the story bit at the end but everything else was alright.

Just heard about the plans for the finale. I'm expecting another cop out, but I really hope we don't get one. Nice to see those people returning though.

Gatiss is exceptionally popular in nerd circles in general, and would have brought Who back himself if he had had the same pull as RTD. The Unquiet Dead is actually seen by many as the first decent story of the new run (Rose was surprisingly poorly received). Cold War has also just gone down pretty well, so Gatiss is secure there. He's also writing and helming the new drama about the creation of Who that is showing this year as part of the anniversary (and looks very good, btw). So despite a few duff stories- with Victory of the Daleks being the big disappointment- he remains popular.

But, for example, Helen Raynor got absolutely torpedoed for Evolution of the Daleks (which was dire), and they had her back for The Sontaren Stratagem (which was average). RTD wrote an entire section of his book called 'Bastards' in discussion about how Raynor was treated (pretty much the dark side of fandom there), so the answer from RTD was a definite no, he does not care.

That said- Ashley Graham, who wrote Fear Her, which to my mind is the worst story of the entire New Who run and was voted similarly by Doctor Who Magazine (a more sane place than the forums), was never used again. That's not necessarily cause and effect, as he does other work, but I think it's very hard to see him trying again after that.

Makes me glad I'm more removed than ever from the general fandom. Thanks for the knowledge though.

I wouldn't conflate the forums with general fandom. I consider my self a pretty big Who fan but I won't post there under any circumstances. RTD had it right, really.

Fair enough, but I stand by my statement. I...I can really get tired of Whovians, even otherwise decent people I know irl.

I've been watching everything from the beginning with my gf, who's into it now. Torchwood, Sarah Jane, the whole deal. Closed off from others, just enjoying it, it's great. But trying to analyze stuff online - even in a more sober place like KMC - kills some of the mystique for me. Same with overzealous fans, whose dead-horse-beating of DW tropes is annoying.

Like, I used to like to wear bow ties. And I'm a musician and dancer, whose social life gives me a lot of opportunities to wear them. Anymore, I endlessly get the expected "bow ties are cool, teeheehee" because they know I'm into Who, but also the less-obvious expectation that I'm going to somehow be cosplaying the Doctor at a charity banquet or some sh*t. Basically, I love Matt Smith, but he killed bow ties for me for the next 5 years or so.

'Wibbly wobbly timey wimey' is one of those memes from fans that started cool but is now gut-wrenchingly annoying.

At least Doctor Who fandom is mostly spared the 'We liked it before it was mainstream' crowd that can make talking about Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones a nightmare, because Who was always mainstream. There is a hardcore that insists you aren't a real Who fan unless you've seen it from An Unearthly Child, but they are pretty rare.

I've never quite understood the mentality of those who post on the forums every week to say how much they hate it- neither why they continue to watch or why they feel the need to post.

I'm liking the series thus far, the assistant is...ok

Journey to the Center... was good. I don't think they've been doing a great job since the Ponds jumped ship though. I'm still waiting for Clara to do, well, anything exciting. She seems so passive. Her Dalek and Victorian appearances were so well-done that I think it set expectations a bit too high. They have yet to find a role for her that comes anywhere near those two.

Caught up on the last episodes and tonight's final, batty Diana Rigg in Victorian London not bad. The cybermen I hope were from this universe with a nice new look but the story was a bit weak for me. As for the final..well I liked it.

And that final minute what a bombshell! Nice touch and not forgetting great tribute to the classic ere of Dr Who, can't wait for November. 😄

Well, Gallifrey Base just got its highest amount of concurrent users ever, beating even Tennant's finale, and it looks set to be the highest rated episode ever there was well.

Which s interesting- because it was hardly the best story. ever. Barely any story at all. But as a fan orientated episode, he made it a piece of genius, and even River Song couldn't put me off it it. Suddenly a huge number of people who had started to see Moffat as the Anti-christ are now considering whether he is in fact the messiah.

He's played a long shot here, and the tension build up for the next six months will be incredible. If he pulls it off with a successful outcome, I think the vast majority of the hate will become love and he'll be deified in the Who canon. We'll see...

We have to wait until November? Dammit. So any thoughts as to what the secret with the new guy is?

Spoiler:
Perhaps Hurt is just an old version of the 8th doctor? They really didnt show the 8th Doctor other then a very breif scene that barely showed him

I loved the episode, some of the CGI sucked but what I didnt get from this episode was the fact

Spoiler:
Clara merged with the Doctor's timeline allowing her to see the past, present, future of the Doctor but she didn't see any doctors past the 11th Doctor? Seems odd. Also since she remembered the reality that got erased does she remember the Doctor's real name now too?

Also what really was the point of the Silence? Why blow up the Tardis? and how did they even do that?

"On the fields of Trenzalore, at the fall of the eleventh, when no living creature can speak falsely or fail to answer, a Question will be asked, a question that must never, ever be answered."

Yeah, a few people have said he's either an

Spoiler:
older 8th doctor, or a doctor that was between one of the others, which would make matt smith's one the 12th.

The name thing honestly felt like a bit of a cop-out, tbh.

Spoiler:
Well we know there is other incarnations as well, as the Valeyard happens between the 12th and 13th version of the Doctor. So Clara should have seen them too.

Doctor only can have just 12 regenerations, and 13th is his final form. So wonder what their going to do about that to keep the series going.

Yeah true.

No need for spoilers for the episode already aired, though do use tags if you are potentially spoiling the 50th.

Anyway- the GI was removing the Doc's past, not future, and Clara followed him. Hence no future was involved.

The 12 regenerations thing is a pretty trivial barrier for future writers. It's already been blown to pieces by various aspects of the show anyway.

I thought the name thing was just right, myself.

Doctor mentioned the tear covered his future as well. It was his "entire journey through the universe" and "All the days, and the ones I havent lived yet" and mentioned GI would be scattered along his timeline (not just the past) and "attacked his entire timeline"
