So only four serials in three years is too much?

spoken like a fan of six months
seeing as were on episode 727 in a 40 plus years series with maybe 30 years of them onscreen id say that 3 Dalek episodes in the last 3 years is lazy

this sums up the poll on bbc news today about the top twenty Dr Who villains....not one from the pre Eccleston series
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/6574753.stm

Heaven forbid I speak like what I am! 🙄

I admit I'm a new fan. I have no problem acknowledging so. And I realize my opinion will differ from that of a longtime fan.

Be that as it may, considering all the episode titles simply with the word "Dalek" in the name, I would bet that there are more than 30 episodes involving the Daleks. I do know that the first serial involving the Daleks was seven 25-minute episodes long. The Daleks' Master Plan, in Season 3, was 12 such episodes long!

In fact, while looking up all sorts of information I could only find three or four Dalek serials shorter than four episodes in length.

Given this, I stand by my opinion that a story or two per year is not too often.

If you want to be technical, then the poll contains three villains with pre-Eccleston history - the Daleks, the Cybermen, and the Autons.

well you could make the same comments with your sig and avatar for those strange POTC fans concerning spoilers regarding whatserfaces oriental based costuming

and 3 Dalek stories in 3 seasons straight containg 13 episodes each is too much

they are playing it safe

If it's not plot-related, it's not a spoiler. Someone's costume is not a spoiler, a picture of a creature from an episode not yet seen is 🙄

And I'd venture a guess that Daleks are used fairly often (though I don't agree on that, that'd be like saying the X-Files used the grey aliens too often) because they're very recognizable and are one of the most recognizable sci-fi bad guys, period. I'd never even heard of Doctor Who until a year ago and even I knew what a Dalek was.

ok but judging by the list it refers to the RTD versions and not the other WHOs versions of the Autons and cybermen

its obviously done by "the kids" and the new Who fans

Daleks are extrmeely bankable and were always in high demand. That they did not appear in every season was normally more to do with issues with the Nation estate than anything else.

When orignally introduced, the Daleks appeared in every single series until the Second Doctor (who met them twice in his first season). So maybe this is just getting back to roots.

I know, I just wish they would bring back more of the classic characters.

I think they have done that sufficiently, actually. We've had three big classics come back already, several more name-checked, and he's even cameod the Macra. Can't complain that much,=.

True the Dalek phenomenon was akin to Beatlemania in the 60s but like many fads people got tired of the Daleks
A lot of the 70s Who people who worked on the series were more creative and didnt want to rely on the Daleks anymore
the names of the directors and writers escape me but they tried to stay away from the Daleks and groaned whenever the subject was raised for a possible storyline and this was the case in this era up til Tom Bakers Doctor and Genesis OT Daleks.
Pertwee in particular hated the Daleks but for another reason...he thought they took away the focus from him.

The Daleks of today are back for another reason..........fickle noughties tv viewers and after a second trip to New New york i think RTD is running out of ideas

RTD has TONS of ideas. What he needs is a decent returnable bad guy, because he hasn't nailed that one yet. The Judoon are actually good as far as they go but are only thugs- like Ogrons, someone would have to be running them.

The Pertwee era Dalek stories were poor, that was all part of the story (and also started the tradition of increasingly silly names). it wasn't until Terrance Dicks actually bounced a script back at Terry Nation saying "It's the same as all the other ones you ever wrote!" did Genesis get made.

But it really was the nation factor, even after he died, that slowed things after that. The new series very nearly didn;t get permission for it.

Now the Daleks are so bankable that the Nation estate will say yes to nearly anything. With the doors open they can make as many as the like. One a season is most likely expected.

i agree with what your saying but regarding RTDs tons of ideas i disagree, sure well get a storming finale but last weeks was V poor
13 episodes with only a couple written by RTD you think hed come up with something better than that
i think he needs a word from others much like the writer/director of another Sci Fi classic that was brought back after a long hiatus
all the boards are divided with last weeks episode
it was a filler episode

i wonder how things would have been if the Nation estate said no about the daleks seeing as they have been a big factor in this Doctors success

The Master kind of filled in the role of returning bad guy I think.

I think you kinda missed the point of what was being said there, Starhawk.

No I get it, it's just to me they are The Doctor's ultimate enemy and you only want them to show up for really big moments like when they fought the Cybermen.

its in the news today that Kylie has been aproached for the Xmas special

what a surprise

I liked the last episode, but it's not because it was based in the US this time! 😛

I liked the last episode, except for the Hybrid. I probably could have gotten over the design, if not for it still having the Nu Yawkah accent.

The pig slaves made me think of pygmy Osokans...

Dr Who stateside ?
pull the other one..some nice CGI but that was more Brookdale park than Central Park

I hope the hybrid is swiftly offed next episode
Kids will like it though and thats what its there for but im sure theres a lot of miffed middle aged DWB readers out there having a nice lie down as i type this

Think again. There was location filming at Central Park, the Empire State Building, and the Statue of Liberty. First location filming outside the UK in the new series, in fact.

Big improvement on the first few episodes for me, but still could have done without the pigs... and the hybrid, I couldn't stop rolling my eyes.

But yeah they shot some of the location shots in America.

A improvement on the last two story's but I shall hold off on my verdict until I see the conclusion to the story.
