Official Doctor Who Thread

I certainly would not call it terrible. Not nearly what good prosthetics can do, but look at the thing. Remember how silly the queen of the Racnoss was, not even being able to move? Considering that DW operates on a TV show budget, they do very well with their CG monsters.

It was a bit... Resident Evil 4, though.

On a BBC tv show budget at that.

I don't mind the CG monsters in the least. I haven't watched many of the old Doctors, but I would have died if Lazarus the Monster was chasing the Doctor down hallways as an oversized puppet or something...

Yeah there have been some crap Who monsters such as the rubber dinosaurs in INVASION OF THE DINOSAURS and the big bluebottle in THE GREEN DEATH but it isnt the 70/80/90s anymore
the body of the creature and movements were passable but the face was crap..very poor
the new series monsters have all worked fantastically when its man in a rubber mask or prosphetics,a robotic suit such as a cyberman or Dalek or a clockwork robot but the CGI creatures always look shite
if Sam Ramis team have a hard time getting Spiderman to do acrobatics right with an open budget the Who team are going to fail on the pittance they get
and fail they always do CGI creature wise
last nights creature along with the School Reunion creatures and the ones with the church christening in series 1 all make the Mummy Returns Scorpion King look like bleedin Gollum
im not a fan of CG characters in big budget ficks as i still think we are in the early stages in terms of realism with only a few convincing characters - Davey Jones,Gollum and Yoda at a stretch really working and so low budget cg is never going to work
its a brave attempt to include penny pinching CG in Who to keep the kids who grew up on Jurassic Park and the SW PT happy but its a let down to the great acting being done and totally distracting to the story to which there wasnt much there last night either so maybe its a job well done then afer all

Really, if you look at it, the DW team is only using CGI when a practical effect just wouldn't work. You really can't ask for much more than that. And, in my opinion, that has occasionally led to creatures that are less than stellar, like the Racnoss queen and the mutated Sec in the last serial.

I'm not sure why you dislike their use of CGI, when it should be obvious that attempts at practical effects would look even worse and downright cheesy at times.

i understand but why bother when it looks so crap
give me latex any day
as for Sec i think after my initial dislike that it worked because i,my chick, sister, freinds and their kids all said they felt sorry for Sec last week and thats because it was a man in a mask..there was weight to him..not just another pixilated apparition
i dont understand how the mill can say "yip thats great " and go with it when it looks so terrible and im sure an animatronic head would have worked on that Gatiss creature better for close ups
what was the point of the creature any way...it was a needless addition to a pathetic story
they were just showing off with the CG and died on their arse
i read an interview that they are very proud of their CG
they need a reality check and on the Who forums fans are giving them one

Personally, if they had used animatronics, I would have screamed. It would have worked terribly, because it'd have those corny close-ups.

maybe
i doubt they could pull off ROT SITH style animatronic mouth movements over at the Who effects dept

Plus with a creature that moved around like the Lazarus monster did? That's just not going to work well with props. The CG worked fine.

The CG in DW has hardly the budget of a Hollywood blockbuster and anyway I have seen crap CG in films which clearly have a higher budget. CG is hit and miss, yes the face of the Lazarus monster was naff and to be honest the monster was not very well thought up.

Even saying that, the episode was still a good romp.

I enjoyed the episode and the ones to come look interesting.

i meant for close ups with the chatter

well have to disagree then

I try not to worry too much about that kind of thing, due to it still being relatively better than it was. I know timkes have moved on, but Doc Who now is better for its time than Doc Who ever was before.

Take Spearhead from Space- brilliant Pertwee story, one of the best paced of the era, great bad guys in the Autons... bloody stupid rubber tentacles to repreesent the Nestene at the end. The entire miscontinuity with the Nestene in the new show being lqiuid plastic is entirely forgivable on the premise "the original interpretation looked shit."

Caves of Androzani- contender for best story ever. Bloody stupid monster in that too. Worse, doesn't even have any decent input into the plot. Story was still brilliant.

Limits, of course. The green pantomime horse beast of Warriors of the Deep was a punctuation mark on the disaster that was that story. Good last line, ironically. Five seconds of quality follow several episodes of shite.

Yeah the series did get itself in a bit of a state.

Anyway, looking forward to this weeks episode 🙂

is it me or is the series getting a bit formulaic
sounds like another Satan Pit

there was a great Captain Jack clip on Jonathon Ross last night
here it is
but dont look if you dont like spoilers

I thought the episode tonight was a massive let down.

Why is that? I thought it was rather good.
