I still think his height is the main reason he has got to wear he is today though. He is not the best technical player, He isn't great in the air, he doesn't have amazing skill... his height cause's defenders problems which is why he will be in the England squad for the world cup because no other English forward has that.

Why has he got to wear 'he is today'? Sure, it's important to stay in the moment, but there's nothing wrong with the clothes he had the previous day; 'he was yesterday', I think they were called...

I guess it's just a sign on the times. Footballers are paid so much money, they could probably just choose to wear 'he will be tomorrow', and no-one would bat an eye-lid. Still, I don't think Beattie is much more economical with his dress-sense. I guess all these footballers skipped Civics class in favour of some more time on the pitch. It's a shame really...Oh, well...

where then if you are going to be pedantic..

you knew what I meant.

btw literally isnt the same as 'figure of speech'... literally means it actually happened, 'figure of speech' means it doesnt necessarilly have to happen... ie people say on the edge of their seat when really they were sat back in their chair but excited by the game... i was literally on the edge of my seat.

i think Beattie would be a better choice for England allaround, better player, better in the air, better at everything.

Crouch doesn't have technique. He's already getting too much credit here, let's not go overboard. He's a poacher, no technique or great playing ability there.

He's shit in my opinion, in many people's opinions. There's no "Crouch isn't shit, fact."

He's not a quality player. He's a poacher who is brought on as a last minute hope and SOMETIMES, scores a goal if they continue playing the long ball game to him. When he f*cks up he f*cks up royally. The fact that you're hailing Crouch as some blessed wonder for the England squad is what's amazing. 3rd best attacking option? You are seriously claiming the man is better than Defoe and Bent? Give it a rest. He's not a better player than either of them, he might be a better poacher. Those that can't play, poach. Owen isn't as good a player as Defoe, Bent or Rooney, neither is Crouch.

The only way he causes "problems" is if they keep playing the long ball/cross game and he can his his lanky self connected to it which is by no means a guarantee. He's taller, he doesn't have a magic heading ability.

Yeah, Crouch is shit.....ofcourse he is 🙄

i would take crouch. opponents will be more wary of his presence than beattie. owen rooney and defoe should do enough damage anyway.

Just bluntly said:
So you put in a shitty player, instead of a good one, just because the shitty will scare of opponents?

I'm not forcing you to agree.

If you want to praise the man, do so. I think he's shit, whether you like that or not, it's a more credible claim that you calling him a great technical player. Even Deano admits the man isn't a good "player" in terms of ability.

If James Beattie ever gets another England cap.....then there's something wrong with the world of football

he has no pace. thats about it really. he has great ability for his height. he just needs to start scoring regular like he did against southampton. he has about 10 goals this season i think.

He isn't a good technical player though.

Ronaldinho is a technical player, Robinho is a technical player, Robben is a technical player, Henry is a technical player, Lampard also is a technical player.

Crouch? No.

-AC

technique doesnt just mean dribbling past 7 players and doing stepovers.

for his height he has very good technique. lovely first touch and has great link up play

Crouch is truly a team player who has much better technique than his gangly appearance might suggest.

Link up play is only as good as the players you are playing with. He passes and the other players do the work. Where was his link up playing at Southampton?

As VVD said: Someone might have good technique for being in a wheelchair, it doesn't mean it's ok to play them.

Actually, 'literally' is a figure of speech. What you stated is an example of a figurative expression, otherwise it wouldn't make any sense. Think about it...

I agree Beattie is better, but he's not great either. Why is it that Sven thinks England must compliment our speedy, skillful strikers with a big donkey a la Heskey and Crouch?

no literally is an intensifier you use before a figurative expression, it isnt a figurative expression in itself.
what i said was a figurative expression like i explained, but i was.... literally...(adv 1: in a literal sense; "literally translated"; "he said so literally" [ant: figuratively] 2: (intensifier before a figurative expression) without exaggeration; "our eyes were literally pinned to TV during the Gulf war" [syn: virtually])) on the edge of my seat, rather than figuratively.

oh what i think you're trying to do actually is take the actual phrase 'figure of speech' literally... well... if so that's way too pedantic for me to even bother arguing about.

but since the term 'figure of speech' actually appears on dictionary.com in the way i used it, i dont know what you're going on about

It's good that you use dictionary.com, but it's a shame that your comprehension of its information is so selective.

Here's what you're missing:

Usage Note: For more than a hundred years, critics have remarked on the incoherency of using literally in a way that suggests the exact opposite of its primary sense of “in a manner that accords with the literal sense of the words.” In 1926, for example, H.W. Fowler cited the example “The 300,000 Unionists... will be literally thrown to the wolves.” The practice does not stem from a change in the meaning of literally itself if it did, the word would long since have come to mean “virtually” or “figuratively” but from a natural tendency to use the word as a general intensive, as in They had literally no help from the government on the project, where no contrast with the figurative sense of the words is intended.

You don't need to apologise. I'm just here to help people gain a greater understanding of the language they are using. Welcome.

I'm done arguing this point in all honesty.....because i've realised how ridiculous the arguement against Crouch really is, he is not shit!!! Fcat, like Dean said, it's not opinion at all, it's a fact that Peter Crouch is an international quality player, he's better than James "big t.i.t.s" Beattie, better than Andy Johnson (and I am one of the biggest AJ fans around) better than Jermaine Defoe (Why is he in the squad?? He doesn't even play for his club most times) he's not just technically good for his height, he's technically good compared to most, but to do it at his size is impressive!!! In another forum i'm a member of, we've got about 100+ people saying he is a class player and deserves to be in the England squad, they say this because it is true!!!! He is not a donkey, he is not just a target man, he's a complete player, though I do agree he lacks pace, but we have Owen and Rooney for that, i'm not saying he should be a starter, I am saying he definately needs to go to Germany, he could win us the World Cup, he is a potential match winner in that respect, but whether you think he's shit or not.....simple fact is that he isn't, so get over it, or live in ignorance for the rest of your days

So, what I think you're saying is that he's shit, right? Yeah, I agree. He is shit.
