But they aren't measured, so it becomes an observation thing. Gerrard is generally held as being better defensively, I can't say for sure as of the moment, but by observation I have seen that Gerrard does most of the previously mentioned things better than Lampard. Also, Lampard may score more goals, but Gerrard is no slouch in the scoring department either.

Please, stop saying "Gerrard is generally held as...", yes, due to hype. Go look at the stats on http://www.skysports.com or something.

Who do you think is better defensively?

They are measured, by Opta, and by the clubs' own Prozone system.

You are missing my point, though. People base their assumptions (often) on things that don't exist. Contribution is actually measurable, other than 'he gives a boost to the team', which is nebulous anyway. Even then, you can point to results with or without the player, and from what I remember of last season, Liverpool had more success without Gerrard (That's an actual fact, not a guess).

Well, I did look it up and found that Gerrard has a very good success on his tackles at 83%. Lampard's is 78%.

Lampard and Gerrard are weary similar players, the only difference between them is their daily form.

How many have they each attempted?

Shut-up, you two! It's boring!

Can't remember and don't feel like finding it again, but Lampard had more attempts and a few more successful tackles.

to get a well rounded idea of their defensive ability you'd have to look at tackleas attempted, won, fouls conceded, midfield headers attempted and won...

and you'd be lucky to find all of that information.

Well Gerrards tackles will be higher, Lampard doesnt have to do as much defending He has Makelele to do that for him!

yeah that was pretty boring. lampard is a better player, all you have to do is watch their games to see that.

Plus, Gerrard has that stupid expression on his face all the time, as if he's just bit into a lemon whilst the Sun's in his eyes.

The Prozone stats measure it. Sadly we don't see them.

We just get to say Gerrard is better because he took a boo son.

What the hell is this 'boo son' that you talk about, freak?

Andy Gray.

"Take a boo (bow), son. Ah meen thaht, tek a boo.".
