I just think that was the perfect time for Palps to show his true form. And to make Anakin think that Jedi's were indeed the "Bad guys".
Like Palps said "On whos point of view" Thats was the proof in showing that Jedi's(Counsil)were the ones who wanted all the power and control for themselves.
I just watched the end of AOTC myself to see if Anakin is smoking, and he is (though it really looks more to be his leather vest than his body).
But the other thing I noticed is more relevant. When talking to Dooku, Sidious looks completely human, as does he when appearing in TPM. If his human looking face is a deception for the senate, why is he putting the effort into hiding it from the TF, Maul, and Dooku?
I just have to look at it from the perspective of what the filmmakers (GL mainly) intended, and it's just very hard to see he intended anything other than the lightning deforming Sidious. He is never shown deformed prior to it. For Lucas to have it be that he Sidious truly looks that way and his "senate face" is a facade is just INCREDIBLY contrived.... EU contrived even (I don't hate EU but so much of it is just grasping at straws to come up with the story the author/fans want, e.g. Boba Fett's survival of the Sarlac)
I'm on the fence with Palpatine's appearance...
I think the whole idea of the lightning changing his face is cheap... I prefer that it's his true identity that's been revealed...
but really it doesn't matter that much I guess.
On his strength... I'd say Sidious is definitely superior to Mace. But Yoda is about the same strength as Sidious.

When Sids was talking to senate through satelite, He had over half his face covered. Plus everytime he did sent a order out, wasnt that in the same chambers the Jedi or anyone could easily catch him and contain him? There was no need to keep changing his apperance back and forth. We dont even know if he had his "Senate face" with Maul all the time or not.
Even when Anakin went to go kill the senate, they didnt even know he was a jedi. Even when one of the members was pleading for his life.
I hate the EU. Its full of crap to me. I go by movies and movies only. Boba Fett's survival? Bah!

You are correct in that it's hard to see his face with Maul, but watch the last few scenes of AOTC, it is very easy to tell that Palpatine looks completely normal when talking to Dooku, his skin is smooth and his color is normal.

well yes but my point (it's a pretty popular belief) is that if Anakin would have been treated well he would not have been so clouded, and if Mace would have brought him along this time he would have felt like he actually belonged in the brotherhood (remember he wants to, "I'm not the Jedi I should be"😉 and helped toast Sidious.
Isn't the whole idea behind Anakin's fall the foribidden love he has for Padme and that the Jedi wont allow him to love?
Because in the end it's his love for his son that destroys the Emperor and the Sith...
If the Jedi allowed him to have open feelings for Padme I don't believe he would have fallen...
