Gallagher begins to back away from them, towards the exit, but keeps his concentration on Varm and Kathya. He uses Scan on the pair.
"I understand, but I must see him," Gallagher says.
Does Kathya look like she would be capable of combat, as Varm is? Gallagher is not expecting them to beat him senseless for this, but I want to get a feel for these Synod types. They do not seem to be the nicest people in the Galaxy, from the ones I've met.
You don't have that knack, Gallagher. Andro's the man to size people up like that.
Varm, as ever, is radiating unpleasant feelings in your direction and wants an excuse to do you harm.
Kathya is cautious.
Varm makes a move- which you think is for a sidearm, Gallagher- but Kathya puts her arm on his.
"If you don't leave we'll call for security," she says. "This is a restricted area and on that basis you're seeing no-one."
It's actually Kathya that answers.
"Speaking from experience, are you?" she says. "You're no nobleman. But Varm is a Priest. You can forget about seeing the Abbot; he has little time for liars."
And that's more or less that. Walking in and trying to barge your way past people wary of assassins wasn't 100% smart.
However, that said...
You are not sure if they WERE wary of assassins. That does not feel right to your well-honed instincts. You certainly didn't feel that they thought you were going to do the Abbot harm- indeed, you would outright say that Varm was lying through his teeth when he said his last line there.
As you back off immediately, Kathya tells the security people not to bother. But as you go down the stairs, you are aware of heated voices back up there- out of hearing range. For normal people anyway- not for the senses of a Jedi.
From now on, Gallagher will keep an eye out for Varm, either to talk to him or just to be wary of his presence. They have good eyes, I will give them that. Too bad Gallagher lacks Savoir-Faire, pulling off a nobleman would be much easier.
Can Gallagher hear anything from where he is? If not, he will get out of sight from the stairway, wait until Kathya and Varm go away (using Sense to track them), make a quick Observation roll off of his Perception score (another thing I need), make sure Kathya and Varm aren't near, then try to get into hearing range.
Out of sight down the stairs, you can hear the convo with your senses.
"He'll only come back again. You should have let me scare him off." (Varm)
"You wanted to do more than just scare him." (Kathya)
"Damn right."
"Cretin. How the hell would that look?"
"Easy. We'd just say he'd come to kill the Abbot and we caught him."
"This isn't some tramp, Varm. He's important. The Klinge-Fausts would ask questions."
"It's YOU who says he is no nobleman!"
"Which if true makes it twice as likely there would be questions! If he's not a nobleman he's possibly something dangerous!"
"Too dangerous to be left alive."
"NO. Not unless he gets too close. And what the hell were you thinking anyway? What if the Abbot had come out and found his Priest waving a gun at someone?"
"He's busy with his work, he's going to be no trouble to us."
"I'll tell you when he is busy or not. And I'll tell you when people die or not. You've already made an ass of yourself, wandering around with that attitude. Other than making yourself suspicious, it's a miracle that the Abbot hasn't noticed. You'd better shape up."
"You don't want to bully me too much, Kathya. Soon I will be Abbot. Then we'll see."
"Yeah. We will. You'll find I'm full of surprises."
"This is my problem; I'll take care of it."
"We'll be done here soon. No-one dies unless they see something that no-one should see, got it? You just keep doing your job. Keep the Abbot happy. Just one more day."
