"In what way are your ships not equipped?" he asks. "Also, are you sure about the security of youyr facility? And why did the pirates smash the equipment? Why didn't they steal it?"

"What exactly was it you weere doing at the time the pirates attacked?"
"Well, we were inspecting the asteroid field, Pirates came from another direction. And there was not much time to go back for documents. And what are we doing here.... we jumped here from hyperspace, this was the closest world with high level of civilization. Some of my partners speak about restoring the base, but honestly I am not sure if I want to return there, ever."

Can't see a reason for you to change your story baout being the only surviving merchant, Takuan. You don't know Rand has contradicted it, and furthermore saying you haven't had time to check, in the time your ships have been leisurely flying in here and landing, sounds rather odd.
"This is an Immigration service," says the interviewer, icily. "This is a dangerous area of space. Criminal threats to the Galaxy are increasing. The people are concerned. Our agency exists to prevent the influx of criminal elements into the Republic. Therefore, all those without approved papers or from outside the Republic must have thier occupations and puroses on record so that the veracity of their reason for entering can be ascertained. No longer does the Republiuc exist to subside the criminal element of the Galaxy. If you have a genuine reason to be here, then we shall record that. Else you shall be excluded. And so yes. I need every detail possible on your line of work."

"I believe they were taking what they could grab easily, but were destructive out of pure spite," Tanic says, "We are not pirates, nor are we a combative group. As only we barely managed to escape with three ships, one of which was already in space at the time of the attack, we couldn't very well fight off well equipped pirates who attacked us, could we? I'm sure you appreciate that."
